Summary

A 48mm rugged GPS sports watch with a sapphire AMOLED screen, offline maps, a real flashlight and long battery life, built for hikers, runners and divers who want to skip a subscription. Check the on-watch navigation before you buy: reviewers and owners report route-creation failures that firmware updates have only partly fixed.

Strengths

  • Sapphire and titanium outer parts feel durable, with a bright display and useful physical buttons.
  • Real battery life: Wareable recorded 18 days of mixed use with about 14 hours of GPS.
  • In Tom’s Guide’s 11-mile ride, the watch logged 11.17 miles against Strava’s 11.23.
  • Downloadable maps and a wide spread of sport modes, with no mandatory subscription.
  • A genuine built-in flashlight plus speaker and microphone.
  • Manufacturer 22mm straps and a matching charging dock can be bought separately in the US.

Weaknesses

  • On-watch route creation failed repeatedly in WIRED’s testing, including one suggestion that pointed onto an interstate.
  • In one comparison the watch undercounted GPS elevation by 48 ft, reading 628 ft against Strava’s 676 ft.
  • The 48mm case is bulky: it can snag on sleeves and press buttons at night on a smaller wrist.
  • No standalone LTE, no offline Spotify streaming and no US Zepp Pay.
  • Offline maps take several download steps and region setup before a trip.
  • Firmware keeps changing, so older reviews may not match the watch you buy.

Full research notes and sources

WIRED’s 2025 review hit repeated Route Creation Failed errors, slow controls and a route suggestion that pointed onto an interstate, and Wareable still called auto-rerouting unfinished in February 2026. Owners report missing turn prompts on an overlapping out-and-back route compared with Garmin, and an April 2026 thread describes an update that briefly removed rerouting before restoring it. June 2026 firmware 4.9.4.4 notes describe better map management, route planning and up to 100 stored routes, and no standardized test has covered every complex route since. Treat the watch’s own route generation as a convenience, not a safety tool: load your region onto the watch and inspect the route on another device before you head out.

Battery life and charging

Amazfit rates the 700 mAh cell at up to 25 days typical, 10 days heavy, 38 h accurate GPS, 74 h power-saving GPS, 85 h GPS long-life and 116 h maximum GPS battery; those are separate conditions, not additions. Wareable saw 18 days while logging roughly 14 hours of accurate GPS, with a 5-hour hike draining 17%. The box includes a magnetic charging head without a USB cable. At an assumed 24 full charges a year, 75% efficiency and $0.20/kWh, a 700 mAh cell works out to about $0.02 a year in electricity, excluding standby draw.

Parts and running costs

There is no annual consumable. Amazfit’s US store lists a 22mm sport silicone strap at $19.99 and a 22mm nylon strap at $24.99, both explicitly listed for the 48mm Pro. The matching T-Rex 3 Pro charging dock is $19.99 and does not include a USB cable. Replace straps and dock on wear or loss, not on a fixed schedule, and do not buy the generic T-Rex 3 charging accessory on the strength of the similar name. Standard watch and training features carry no subscription, though optional services, watch faces and Zepp Aura offerings can cost extra. No genuine user-orderable battery, display, button or seal parts are published, so a repair means asking Amazfit service.

Worth owning

The research’s decision thresholds: at or below $300 new this is a strong buy for someone who accepts Zepp’s limits; $301–$340 is good with an authorized retailer and a return policy; $341–$380 is conditional; and at $399.99 weigh the alternatives. The non-Pro T-Rex 3 is $279.99 with Gorilla Glass, a stainless bezel and no flashlight or Bluetooth calls. COROS PACE Pro is $299, and COROS NOMAD is $349 with an MIP display and a different dive rating. Electronic Express listed the Black Gold 48mm at $329.99 through October 11, 2026, but that is a different color and SKU from Tactical Black.

Which model this is

This page covers the T-Rex 3 Pro in 48mm, regulatory model A2444, sold in Tactical Black. The 44mm T-Rex 3 Pro is a different watch with a 1.32-inch 466 × 466 screen and a 20mm strap, and the non-Pro T-Rex 3 and Ultra 2 differ again. The case is fiber-reinforced polymer with a grade-5 titanium bezel and buttons, not solid titanium, and the watch ships with a charging head but no USB cable or wall adapter.
