Summary
A manual 5-cup drip brewer with a glass carafe, reusable filter, pause-and-pour and a two-hour auto shutoff, aimed at people who want small batches and no programming. Check the materials before you buy: owners repeatedly describe thin plastic and warped lids, and a replacement carafe costs about as much as the machine.
Strengths
- Two-hour auto shutoff, which some rival listings at this shelf price do not claim.
- Small footprint, so it fits counters where a full-size brewer will not.
- Reusable filter and removable basket keep refills simple.
- Nothing to program, so there is no menu to learn at 6am.
- Warming plate and carafe pouring are generally reported to work as expected.
Weaknesses
- Owners repeatedly describe thin, flexible plastic in the housing, lid and basket area, even though the listing’s material field says stainless steel.
- Lid warping recurs in owner reports for this model. Nobody has counted how often.
- The reusable mesh filter passes fine sediment, so cups come out with sludge in the bottom.
- One owner report says the unit would not restart after being run dry; another says it did not stop pouring when the carafe was pulled. Each is a single report.
- No independent lab test of this model exists, so brew temperature, brew time and extraction are unmeasured.
- A replacement carafe exists, but sellers ask about as much as the whole brewer.

What five cups actually means
Five cups here is 0.8 quarts, about 25.6 US fluid ounces total. That is closer to a small pot for two or three people than a family carafe, and anyone with a full household will fill it twice. The warming plate holds the second round while the first is drunk, which is the one automatic feature on this machine that does real work for you.
Build, lid and the reusable filter
The listing’s material field says stainless steel. Owner summaries written about this exact model describe substantial thin, flexible plastic in the housing, lid and basket area. Read the field as a database entry, not as a description of the body. KitchenGearDude collected owner feedback for this model and heard the same two things repeatedly: compact size and value as the plus, thin plastic and occasional lid warping as the caution.
The carafe has the same split. The seller calls the glass Duralife, and owners plus CoffeeXplore’s two-week hands-on session describe it as thin. The reusable mesh filter is the other repeated complaint: fine sediment comes through in that hands-on test and in owner reports, and no lab test contradicts it because no lab test exists. Amazon’s product page bundles and recommends 1–4 cup paper basket filters, which solve the sediment problem for a few dollars a hundred if you would rather not drink it.
Two functional reports sit on the other side of the ledger. One retailer-mirrored review says the brewer would not restart after being run dry, and another says the new model did not pause when the carafe was removed, even though the listing still claims auto-pause. One report each is not a defect rate.
Repairs and upkeep
Plan on rinsing the basket, washing the reusable filter and descaling when you want to. The exact-model manual mirror points to descaling for coffee that comes out weak or bitter, which is the right first move before you blame the machine.
Repairability is close to zero. This is a cheap appliance with no internal parts catalog, so nothing inside is worth fixing. The carafe is the replaceable part, and an exact-compatible 5-cup carafe exists for this ASIN and a near variant, but sellers ask about as much as the brewer itself. That makes broken glass the one failure that hurts, because buying a new carafe can cost more than buying a new brewer. In practice a dead unit outside warranty means replacement, not repair, which is also a waste problem. Amazon’s own documents do not state a warranty duration we could confirm for this model.
Is it worth it?
Buy it on sale, and check the price before you do. Target has recently priced the 5-cup Mr. Coffee Mini Brew Switch below this machine, and a BLACK+DECKER 5-cup model sits a little above it, so Amazon Basics is rarely the cheapest name on that shelf. What it adds is the included reusable filter and the two-hour auto shutoff, which the Mr. Coffee listing does not claim.
The value lives in the lower half of that price range. Near the bottom it is an easy yes for a one- or two-person kitchen. Creep up toward the top and the case gets thin, because a Mr. Coffee is usually cheaper and brews the same five cups. Check the store panel above for current prices.
Which model this is
This page covers the matte black Amazon Basics 5 Cup Drip Coffee Maker, model CM9452A-UL, UPC 840324419870, sold as ASIN B0D9QFRJMX. It is the non-programmable new model, not the older conventional 5-cup brewer and not the programmable variant. The listing first showed as available on April 29, 2025, which is why long-term owner evidence is thin and why most of what is known about it comes from the last year or so of reviews. One retailer’s editorial copy quotes dimensions around 14 × 8 × 7 inches; that belongs to a different model, and the structured dimensions for this one are 7.08 × 5.31 × 9.45 in.
