Summary
A fanless 13-inch laptop for everyday work, study and travel, built around Apple’s M5 chip with 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD. Check the price before you buy: Apple raised the starting price from $1,099 at its March 2026 launch to $1,299 in June 2026.
Strengths
- Fanless and light at 2.7 lb, with up to 18 hours of rated video streaming.
- 512GB of base storage is double the M4’s, and the SSD is 2x faster than the previous generation’s.
- 16GB of unified memory is standard, configurable to 24GB or 32GB.
- The M5 adds a Neural Accelerator to each GPU core, hardware-accelerated ray tracing and Memory Integrity Enforcement security.
- Two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe 3, a 12MP Center Stage camera and Wi-Fi 7.
- 55% recycled content by weight, including a 100% recycled aluminum enclosure.
Weaknesses
- The base M5 has an 8-core GPU; the 10-core GPU is a paid upgrade, and seller listings do not always make that clear.
- The M5 uses Thunderbolt 4, not Thunderbolt 5 — that is reserved for M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pros.
- The included 40W adapter is not fast charging; a 70W or higher USB PD source is sold separately.
- The 18-hour battery claim comes from Apple’s own tests of preproduction systems at low brightness.
- There are no user-serviceable parts; battery replacement and repairs go through Apple or an authorized provider.
- The starting price went from $1,099 at launch to $1,299 in June 2026.

Performance and the M5 chip
The M5 is built on TSMC’s 3nm (N3P) process with 153.6 GB/s of memory bandwidth, a 28% improvement over the M4, and a 16-core Neural Engine at 42 TOPS. Each GPU core carries a Neural Accelerator, which is where Engadget says the AI gains come from — the Neural Engine itself looks unchanged from the M4. Apple claims up to 4x peak GPU compute versus the M4, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing. The chip also adds Memory Integrity Enforcement, which uses ARM’s memory tagging to defend against buffer overflow and use-after-free bugs. Wi-Fi 7 and Apple Intelligence are not available in all regions, and Siri AI is still in beta in macOS 27.
The M5 is too new for owner consensus — no owner discussions were located. The M4 before it was well received: Wired praised its performance, display, webcam and battery life, and Tom’s Guide called it the MacBook for most people. The M1 earned praise for being “shockingly responsive” and silent. Older models carry warnings: the M2 throttled under high workloads because of its fanless design, the M2 256GB used a single NAND chip that cut read speeds 40–50% and write speeds 15–30%, and the M1 had some reported SSD wear and USB-C dock issues.
Battery and charging
The 53.8 Wh battery is rated for up to 18 hours of video streaming or 15 hours of wireless web. Apple’s claim comes from internal testing of preproduction systems with the display at 8 clicks from the bottom and the keyboard backlight off, so real-world life will vary. The box includes a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter (60W Max) and a 2m USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable; fast charging needs a 70W or higher USB PD source, sold separately.
Storage, memory and price
The base model doubles the M4’s storage with a 512GB SSD that Apple says is 2x faster than the previous generation’s. Memory is 16GB unified, configurable to 24GB or 32GB; storage can be raised to 1TB, 2TB or 4TB. Apple launched the 13-inch at $1,099 in March 2026 ($999 for education), up from the M4’s $999 starting price, then raised it to $1,299 on June 25, 2026. Apple’s 15-inch M5 Air starts at $1,299 with a standard 10-core GPU.
Repairs, warranty and updates
Apple covers the Air with a one-year limited warranty and 90 days of complimentary technical support; AppleCare+ extends coverage. There are no user-serviceable internal components — battery replacement and repairs go through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. macOS updates are free, and Apple says Mac laptops receive them for years, though the exact duration varies by model. Apple Trade In can credit an old machine toward a new one.
Which model this is
This page covers the 13-inch MacBook Air with the M5 chip, 16GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD — the base configuration Apple sells in the US, in Sky Blue, Silver, Starlight or Midnight. The Amazon listing for this configuration is ASIN B0GR1JTFP8. It is not the 15-inch M5 Air, which starts with a 10-core GPU, and it is not a MacBook Pro, which is where Thunderbolt 5 and the M5 Pro and Max chips live.
