Summary
A fanless 15-inch MacBook Air built around Apple’s M5 chip, with a 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display, 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD, aimed at everyday work, study and creative tasks. Check before buying whether you can live with a 60Hz screen, two Thunderbolt ports and memory that is soldered for good.
Strengths
- Notebookcheck calls the M5 the fastest single-core processor it has tested.
- It runs silent: the fanless design showed no throttling in Notebookcheck’s gaming tests.
- The Verge measured 13-14 hours of real-world battery life.
- Notebookcheck found the SSD about twice as fast as the M4 Air’s.
- The display measured 538 nits with no PWM flicker.
- Wi-Fi 7, a six-speaker system and a 12MP Center Stage camera round out the package.
Weaknesses
- The 60Hz display looks dated next to 120Hz rivals.
- Memory and storage are soldered, so there are no upgrades after purchase.
- Only two Thunderbolt 4 ports, with no HDMI and no SD card slot.
- No Face ID; you sign in with Touch ID only.
- The standard warranty is just one year.
- It costs $100 more than the M4 generation it replaces.

Performance and cooling
The M5 is a modest update on paper but not a slow one. Notebookcheck measured it 14% faster than the M4 and 43% faster than the M3 in CPU benchmarks, and called it a perfect match for a fanless chassis. Its gaming run showed no throttling, and its SSD read and write rates of roughly 7,000MB/s and 7,400MB/s are about double the M4 Air’s. The Verge saw 4,175 in Geekbench 6 single-core and 16,567 in multi-core, and its 4K Premiere export finished in 2 minutes 53 seconds.
Battery and charging
Apple rates the 66.5Wh battery at up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web, tested with the display at 8 clicks from the bottom and the keyboard backlight off. The Verge got 13-14 hours of browsing, messaging and streaming. The included 40W adapter will not fast charge the machine; that needs a 70W or higher USB PD source.
Display and ports
The 15.3-inch panel is sharp and calibrates well, and Notebookcheck measured 538 nits, a 1223:1 contrast ratio, 97.5% P3 coverage and no PWM. The catch is refresh rate: 60Hz feels slow next to 120Hz laptops, and owners on r/mac say the same. The factory calibration carries a slight blue cast (dE 2.1) before a manual profile. Connectivity is thin: two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe 3 for charging and a headphone jack, with no HDMI or card reader.
Repairs and upkeep
There is almost nothing to service. Memory and storage are soldered to the board, so buy the configuration you want on day one. Battery replacement is possible but not a user job, and the one-year limited warranty is the standard Apple term, with AppleCare+ available for longer cover. Notebookcheck recommends the base model for most people, since the memory and storage upgrades cost more without changing how the laptop works.
Is it worth it?
Apple lists the 15-inch M5 at $1,299, which is $100 more than the M4 model it replaces. The Verge saw it at $1,149 at Best Buy and $1,299 at Apple in March 2026; B&H discounted a 24GB/512GB unit to $1,499 in August 2026, and Mashable reported a 1TB model at $1,649 at Best Buy in September 2026. Used 512GB units started around $1,236 on Swappa. At the base price it is fair value for a thin, quiet, long-lasting laptop; at $1,500 or more you are near MacBook Pro 14 territory. The $599 MacBook Neo now sits below it as the budget choice.
