Summary
AirPods 5 are Apple’s open-ear wireless earbuds, now with active noise cancellation on both models, an H2 chip, Live Translation and a 3-band equalizer. Check the fit before you buy: the one-size open design does not stay put in every ear.
Strengths
- Active noise cancellation is genuinely effective for open earbuds and now included on the base model.
- Sound is improved over the AirPods 4, with punchy bass and an open, airy stage.
- Voice calling is top-tier with Apple devices, with strong background-noise reduction.
- IP57 makes them more sweat- and dust-resistant than the previous IP54 design.
- The Apple ecosystem links hold tight: instant pairing, automatic switching and Find My.
- The case is compact and pocketable, and 5 minutes of charging buys about an hour.
Weaknesses
- Battery life is short next to rivals: 4 hours with ANC on the base model, against 8 hours for the AirPods Pro 3.
- The one-size open fit does not work for every ear and can feel loose.
- The $129 base model has no volume swipe controls and no Find My speaker.
- Codec support is basic, with no aptX, LC3 or LDAC and no lossless.
- There is no traditional multipoint and no Hearing Aid, heart-rate or Precision Finding features.
- Noise cancellation is weakest against low engine rumble and inconsistent chatter.

Noise cancellation and sound
Apple puts active noise cancellation in both variants, and reviewers find it class-leading for an open design. CNET says it cuts midrange and higher frequencies, including voices, and rates it about 50% more effective than the AirPods 4. PCMag praises it against low, steady drone such as airplane and bus noise but notes it is less effective in a noisy coffee shop where the sound is inconsistent. RTINGS calls it excellent for open earbuds and says it substantially reduces noise almost across the frequency range, with the weakest results against low bass and engine rumble. You do not get sealed in-ear isolation from a bud that does not seal the canal.
On sound, CNET reports punchy, well-defined bass and better detail than the AirPods 4; PCMag calls it balanced and clean rather than heavily sculpted. RTINGS, measuring the wireless case model, finds a flat, mid-forward signature with subdued bass and treble, and notes that Adaptive EQ lifts those at lower volumes with Apple devices, which explains the warmer impression in subjective reviews. A 3-band EQ in iOS 27 lets you adjust the tuning yourself.
Fit is the buying decision
The AirPods 5 rest in the ear instead of sealing it with a silicone tip, and fit is the risk that matters most. PCMag’s reviewer found them somewhat loose and kept repositioning the right bud, though they never came out while walking or jumping. CNET gets a secure fit by wedging them into place but would not trust them for running. RTINGS puts it plainly: one size does not fit every ear.
When the fit works, the open shape is comfortable for long sessions and lighter on the ear than in-ear tips, which is the main reason people choose this design over the AirPods Pro 3. There is no way to try before you buy online, so treat the return window as part of the decision.
Battery, features and the two variants
Apple rates the base model at up to 4 hours with noise cancellation on and 20 hours total with the case; the wireless case model reaches 5 hours and 22 hours total. RTINGS measured 5.1 hours continuous and 22.5 hours total on the wireless case model. Five minutes in the case gives about an hour, and both cases charge over USB-C; only the wireless case adds Qi and Apple Watch charging.
The step-up model also adds on-stem volume swipe controls and a speaker in the case so Find My can play a sound. Both variants share the same earbuds, H2 chip and noise cancellation, so the extra $20 buys convenience, not sound. Live Translation works well but needs language packs downloaded first, and Live Translation and Siri AI are beta features tied to iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence. There is no multipoint, no aptX, LC3 or LDAC, and no lossless.
Price and value
Apple lists the base model at $129 and the wireless case model at $149, down from $179 for the equivalent AirPods 4 model. PCMag found the wireless case model at $149 at T-Mobile and Walmart, and CNET expects holiday discounts to drop the base model below $100.
At $129 the base model is strong value for Apple users who want noise cancellation without silicone tips, and the $20 step to the wireless case is reasonable if wireless charging and the Find My speaker matter. Above $179 the value weakens: the AirPods Pro 3 at $249 adds better noise cancellation, longer battery, the Hearing Aid feature and heart-rate monitoring. Choose the open design only if in-ear tips bother you.
Which model this is
This page covers the Apple AirPods 5, the fifth-generation open-ear earbuds released in September 2026. There are two variants: the base model with a USB-C charging case and the step-up with a wireless charging case; both use the same earbuds, H2 chip and noise cancellation. Match on the charging case and the volume swipe controls before buying, because the base case has no Find My speaker.
The Amazon listing for the base model is ASIN B0HJB69GJL. Do not confuse the AirPods 5 with the in-ear AirPods Pro 3 or the previous-generation AirPods 4.
