Summary

This is the 2025 Apple Watch Ultra 3 in the exact US retail configuration MEWM4LW/A: 49mm natural titanium case, GPS + Cellular, Light Blue Alpine Loop in Medium. It suits an iPhone owner who wants a rugged sports watch with a bright display, dual-frequency GPS and phone-free cellular, but check two things before buying: the band and size at checkout, and the price now that Apple has sold the Ultra 4 since September 18, 2026.

Strengths

  • Independent testing logged about 60–70 hours of mixed use and just over three days, well above Apple’s 42h normal-use claim.
  • Dual-frequency GPS, offline maps, waypoints, Backtrack and precision-start tools make it a strong navigation and workout watch.
  • The LTPO3 display shows a live seconds hand in always-on mode and stays readable at 3,000 nits.
  • Fall and crash detection, a siren and two years of free satellite SOS give several off-grid emergency paths.
  • Rich iPhone integration: Apple Pay, calls, music, apps, notifications and optional 5G away from the phone.
  • Grade-5 titanium, sapphire crystal and a secure Alpine Loop G-hook for rough outdoor use.

Weaknesses

  • watchOS updates have driven battery drain: owners on watchOS 26.5 reported 100% battery health but a fall to 44% by the next morning.
  • Some owners see catastrophic drain, including one Ultra 3 dropping from full to about 20% within a couple of hours.
  • The large 49mm, 61.6g body can catch cuffs and feel bulky on small wrists or at night.
  • Battery life is multi-day, not multi-week; the highest-accuracy running GPS mode runs about 11–14 hours.
  • Satellite is an emergency path needing a clear sky, not general data, weather or unlimited messaging.
  • The textile Alpine Loop absorbs water and dries slowly after swimming or showering.

Battery life and software updates

Apple rates the Ultra 3 at up to 42h normal use, 72h in Low Power, and 20h of outdoor workout with GPS and heart rate in Low Power, charging 0–80% in about 45 minutes. Independent testing beat the spec: The Verge logged about 60–70 hours of mixed use, including a recorded 60h trip ending with 15% left, and The Guardian saw just over three days of casual use. Apps, GPS workouts and screen settings still change any owner’s result.

Software updates are the bigger risk. Owners in r/applewatchultra reported 100% battery-health readings but much faster drain after watchOS 26.5, with one dropping to 44% by 8:45 a.m. the next day and another ending at 35–40% instead of 60–65%. A separate owner saw a full charge fall to about 20% within a couple of hours, including after updating to watchOS 26.4. These are self-selected reports, not a measured defect rate, so treat post-update drain as a known annoyance. If it happens, check Settings > Battery > Battery Health, reboot, then contact Apple if heavy drain continues on a clean setup.

Mapping, fitness and the outdoors

Dual-frequency L1+L5 GPS, route guidance with downloaded offline maps, waypoints and Backtrack anchor the sports tools, and reviewers praised GPS accuracy against dedicated sports watches. The 1,245mm² LTPO3 display keeps a live seconds hand even in always-on mode, and 3,000 nits stays legible in bright sun. Apple rates 100m water resistance under ISO 22810:2010, IP6X dust resistance and EN13319, which covers depth-measuring dive accessories and recreational scuba up to 40m with supported dive software and training. Emergency SOS via satellite is free for two years after activation and needs no mobile plan in supported regions, but it needs a clear sky and does not provide general data, weather or unlimited messaging; The Verge could not ethically test a real SOS dispatch. Messages and Find My over satellite do require an active carrier plan.

Repairs, parts and running costs

The watch has no scheduled disposable parts. The part that wears is the band: Apple sells the exact 49mm Light Blue Alpine Loop in Medium (MFTJ4AM/A) for $99.00, and the original is included, so replace it only if stained, frayed or lost. A spare Apple Watch magnetic fast-charging USB-C cable (ML434AM/A) is $29.00, and a 20W USB-C power adapter is listed at $19.00; a regular phone USB-C cable will not attach to the watch’s charging surface. Apple posts no stand-alone Ultra 3 battery or screen part price, so a repair is a model-by-model estimate with no fixed annual figure.

Running costs are mostly optional. Local activity tracking, GPS workouts, ordinary health data, Apple Pay and offline apps cost nothing a year; cellular calling away from the phone needs a carrier eSIM plan, and post-two-year satellite pricing is not established. Best Buy’s exact-model page offered AppleCare+ at $4.99 a month or $99 for two years, and Theft & Loss at $5.99 a month or $119 for two years.

Is it worth it?

Apple introduced the Ultra 3 at $799 in September 2025, and the Ultra 4 has sold from $799 since September 18, 2026, so what you pay decides. For this exact Medium SKU, Best Buy’s first-party page advertised $699 against a $799 reference but showed Sold Out, while another Best Buy page for the same model advertised $749.95 with Add to Cart. Walmart listed an open-box same-case Light Blue Medium at $669, out of stock. New at $550 or below, the Ultra 3 is an easy pick over the Ultra 4; $551–$625 is very good, and $626–$680 is reasonable if you value the band and can verify warranty. At $750 or more, buy the newer Ultra 4 unless you specifically want this generation.

Which model this is
