Summary

Apple’s entry-level smartwatch shares the flagship Series 11’s S10 chip and adds the SE line’s first always-on display, with core health and safety tracking and no subscription for the basics. Check two things before buying: it works only with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27, and it has no ECG or blood oxygen sensor.

Strengths

  • The same S10 chip and 64GB of storage as the flagship Series 11, at Apple’s lowest Watch price.
  • The SE line’s first always-on display, with PCMag measuring 46 hours of real-world battery against Apple’s 18-hour claim.
  • Fast charging returns up to 8 hours of use from 15 minutes on the cable, twice as fast as the SE 2.
  • Wrist temperature sensing, sleep apnea notifications and gesture controls all arrive for the first time on the SE line.
  • 50-meter water resistance and an Ion-X front glass rated 4× more crack-resistant than the SE 2’s.
  • The safety kit is all here: Fall and Crash Detection, Emergency SOS, international emergency calling, Backtrack and Check In.

Weaknesses

  • No ECG, blood oxygen or hypertension notifications — the Series 11’s health sensors are missing.
  • The 1000-nit display sits well below the Series 11’s 2000 nits and is hard to read in direct sunlight.
  • No UWB chip, no 5GHz Wi-Fi and no IP6X dust rating, so beach and desert use carry more risk.
  • No QWERTY keyboard on the 40mm case — text replies run through dictation, scribble or presets.
  • The older chassis uses thick bezels, and the rear sensors sit less flush on the wrist than the Series 11’s.
  • This model is GPS only, and the fast-charging brick is not in the box.

Battery life and charging

Apple rates the SE 3 at 18 hours, based on its own test of 300 time checks, 90 notifications, 15 minutes of app use and a 60-minute workout. PCMag’s real-world run — always-on display on, two GPS workouts, texts, app downloads — lasted 46 hours, slightly ahead of the Series 11’s 43 and the SE 2’s 37. Low Power Mode stretches the rating to 32 hours; workout tracking alone is rated at 7 hours.

Charging is quick: up to 80% in about 45 minutes, and 15 minutes on the cable returns up to 8 hours of use, twice as fast as the SE 2. PCMag needed 89 minutes for a full charge using an 18W third-party brick. That brick is not in the box — fast charging needs a USB-C adapter of 20W or more, so count one in if you do not already own one.

Health sensors and what’s missing

The core health toolkit is present: heart-rate and irregular-rhythm notifications, cycle tracking with ovulation estimates, sleep stages scored 0–100 (Very Low, Low, OK, High, Excellent), sleep apnea notifications, and wrist temperature sensing. The optical heart sensor is the second-generation unit last used in the Series 5 (2019), and PCMag measured heart rate within 5–10 bpm of a reference watch after a short calibration lag.

Versus the Series 11 you give up ECG, blood oxygen, hypertension notifications and the UWB chip behind precise Find My tracking. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer wrote that the missing ECG “would give me pause” if she were gifting the watch to a parent or someone at higher risk. Sleep apnea notifications carry two fine-print limits: they are intended for people 18 and over without a prior diagnosis, and irregular-rhythm notifications are not meant for anyone under 22 or previously diagnosed with AFib. One inconsistency is worth knowing — Apple’s spec sheet and Tom’s Guide’s full review both list sleep apnea notifications, while Tom’s Guide’s 2026 buying guide claims the SE 3 does not support them; the first-party spec is the safer guide.

Display, design and sunlight

The always-on LTPO OLED is a first for the SE line, but at 1000 nits peak it sits well under the Series 11’s 2000 nits and the Ultra 3’s 3000. Both PCMag and Tom’s Guide found the screen hard to read in direct sunlight — Tom’s Guide’s reviewer wrote that “the 1,000-nit brightness just doesn’t hold up as well in direct sunlight”.

The case is the older chassis, with thick bezels and a design Tom’s Guide calls “closer to the Series 4 era”; the rear sensors “aren’t recessed as neatly, so the watch doesn’t sit as flush on the wrist compared to the Series 11”. Two colors are offered, Starlight and Midnight, where the SE 2 had three. Apple rates the Ion-X front glass 4× more crack-resistant than the SE 2’s, but nobody has published drop or crack rates for the SE 3 specifically.

iPhone requirement and running costs

The SE 3 works only with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27 or later — Apple raised the requirement from iOS 26 at launch, so check your phone before you buy. On-device Siri handles certain commands without Wi-Fi or the phone nearby; Siri AI remains a beta feature, English first and unavailable in the EU at launch, and some Apple Intelligence features carry daily usage limits.

No subscription is required for core functionality. The optional add-on is Apple Fitness+ at $9.99 a month. Apple’s standard warranty is one year, AppleCare+ is available, and Apple sells battery service once capacity drops below 80% — neither AppleCare+ nor battery-service pricing for the SE 3 has been published, so treat those costs as unknown.

Is it worth it?

Apple introduced the SE 3 in September 2025 at $249, replacing the SE 2 at the same entry price, and still lists the 40mm GPS at $249, the 44mm at $279, and cellular models for $50 more; education pricing starts at $229. Against the $399 Series 11 at launch you give up the brighter wide-angle OLED, ECG, blood oxygen, hypertension notifications, UWB and the dust rating — and PCMag still measured longer battery life, 46 hours to 43. If you want the brightest display, ECG or dust protection, step up to the flagship; if you want core smartwatch and health tracking at the lowest Apple Watch price, this is the pick.

Which model this is

This page covers the Apple Watch SE 3 in the 40mm GPS configuration with the Starlight aluminum case and Sand Sport Band (S/M). Apple sells the SE 3 in 40mm and 44mm cases, in Midnight and Starlight, with GPS or GPS + Cellular; this is the entry-level GPS model, with no cellular or 5G. This configuration is ASIN B0HJ9ZNRKT. Do not confuse it with the Series 12 or Ultra 4 flagships, or the older Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), which it replaced.
