Aqara Camera Hub G350: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-05

Summary

Almost every complaint about this camera is software, not hardware: blurred notification thumbnails in the Aqara app, gesture and smile detection that miss, motion blur while the head turns, a privacy mode that Apple Home can pull open, and an Apple Home stream capped at 1080p with no pan, tilt or zoom at all. Record to a microSD card and supply your own 10 W USB-C plug and the yearly cost is electricity alone; cloud retention, 90-day event history and the extra AI detections only work on HomeGuardian, which MacRumors lists at $49.99 a year for a single camera. At the $139.99 Aqara US store price it earns its money only when you want a Matter controller and an Aqara Zigbee hub in the same box, the $124.99 Best Buy bundle is the point to buy it at, and above that a plain single-lens pan-tilt gives you more camera per dollar.

Yearly running cost

Local-only use costs electricity and nothing else. The camera runs on 5V DC 2A, so 10 W at the wall is the ceiling while it is running; multiply that by your hours per day and your local electricity rate. No source publishes a measured draw in normal operation or an owner’s actual yearly bill, so a single figure cannot be computed from what is published. [1] [2]

Cloud retention is the running cost to plan for. MacRumors lists HomeGuardian at $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year for a single camera, and double that for unlimited cameras (May 2026). TechRadar quotes UK figures of £3.99 a month or £39.99 a year for the single-device tier and £7.99 a month or £79.99 a year for unlimited (April 2026); the two sets are different regions and different plan structures, so they do not reconcile. Aqara states cloud storage requires a HomeGuardian plan and that a free trial is included and activates by itself, which means trial-to-paid conversion is a live cost unless you stay local-only. Behind that plan sit 90-day event history, package, vehicle and fire detection, AI video summaries and AI video search. Two outlets ran the camera with no plan at all, so the subscription is optional rather than required. [2] [4] [5] [6]

Apple Home adds a second line. HomeKit Secure Video needs iCloud+, and MacRumors notes that the $0.99 a month 50 GB tier covers one camera while $2.99 a month for 200 GB covers five (May 2026). [5]

When it is a good buy

Store prices outside the marketplace: Aqara’s US store listed $139.99 (October 2026), the same figure Consumer Reports shows, and Aqara’s EU store lists €139.99. TechRadar’s price block gives $139.99 / £139.99 / AU$249, and its affiliate widget showed $124.99 at Best Buy for the 512 GB bundle (April 2026). The spread across those stores is $124.99 to $139.99, and no dated price series exists for a model that launched in March 2026. [1] [4] [10] [11] [13]

Alternatives named in the research: the Aqara G5 Pro is the one to pick if colour night vision is the deciding feature, since it is the model reviewers compare the G350’s grayscale IR against. A sub-£50 competing 4K indoor pan-tilt is the right call when you need only a camera and no hub. And if the household runs Apple Home and nothing else, this camera is not worth buying for that platform alone, because the Aqara app is where the 4K feed and the pan, tilt and zoom live.
