Bambu Lab A1: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-05

Summary

The printer itself is the reliable part: three independent reviews rated it highly, print quality holds up at default settings, and the automatic calibration sequence needs no manual tuning. Nearly every recurring complaint comes from the optional AMS lite multi-spool feeder — chronic “failure to feed” errors on individual slots, false stuck-filament alarms after firmware updates, and purge waste that CNET measured at roughly 2 kg for one 250 g four-color model. Yearly cost is dominated by filament, and purge waste is what turns a small multi-color print into an expensive one. At $379-399 direct from the Bambu US store the printer alone is a good buy; the $199 AMS lite should be a separate decision.

Yearly running cost

Filament is the running cost, and the AMS lite decides how big it is. CNET measured roughly 2 kg of filament consumed across four colors to produce one 250 g four-color model [1], and Tom’s Hardware measured the same model at 2 h 40 m in one color against 6 h 46 m in three colors [2]. To work out your own figure, multiply the purge weight the slicer reports before each multicolor print by your spool cost, then add your single-color material. A four-color job therefore costs several times the model itself in filament.

Electricity: the A1 draws up to 350 W at 110 V and 1300 W at 220 V [9]. Multiply your average draw by print hours and your local kWh rate. Only the maximum draw is published, so a yearly electricity total cannot be stated from the sources.

There are no filters, belts or lubricants in the documented maintenance list, no subscription, and no proprietary filament lock-in [11]. The AMS lite at $199 on the Bambu US store is a one-off purchase in the year you add it [11]. Add to any year when you expect feeder-unit replacements. No defensible yearly total exists in the sources, so treat the purge-waste formula above as the way to budget for it.

When it is a good buy

The bare printer was listed at $379-399 on the Bambu US store in October 2026 [9][12]. Against that:
