Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A 1500-watt flat-top electric griddle with 200 square inches of nonstick surface, a warming tray and a slide-out drip tray, sized for cooking a batch of pancakes or bacon for a group. Check the removable plastic parts early: owners report drip-tray fit and breakage, and the power cord is short.

Strengths

  • The independent outlet that cooked on this exact model found nothing wrong with it; even cooking and fast cooking were its headline findings.
  • Bacon crisped and the grilled cheese melted and browned well on that same test, with almost no grease needed on the nonstick surface.
  • The whole griddle can be submerged once the heat controller comes off, which is unusual at this price.
  • Three parts carry part numbers in the manual: drip tray GD2011-01, thermostat GD2051-02, warming tray GD2051-03.
  • Owners rate the surface area and the nonstick coating highly, and the warming tray holds cooked food while the rest of the group eats.
  • Two-year limited warranty, confirmed by the store page, the manual and a manufacturer service reply.

Weaknesses

  • The removable plastic parts are the weak point: an automated summary of owner reviews scored durable construction at 43%, the lowest of its five attributes.
  • One Home Depot reviewer reports the drip tray falls out too easily and leaves a wide gap between griddle and frame that is hard to clean.
  • The same owner summary splits on heat: 76% praise even distribution, 24% report hotspots, even though the tested unit cooked evenly.
  • The cord is short enough that it decides where on your counter the griddle has to live unless you add an extension cord.
  • No built-in timer, and the fixed 22-inch surface eats counter and cabinet space.
  • The manual says the product contains no user-serviceable parts, so the heating element, electronics and cord are not replaceable.

Cooking results

Reviewed is the only established outlet found that has actually cooked on this exact model. Its protocol is fixed: three strips of bacon, four average pancakes and two eggs on the surface, then grilled cheese sandwiches, scored on how fast and evenly things brown, how the heat holds, how food releases and how the griddle stores.

On the GD2051B, everything it cooked came through evenly and quickly. The bacon crisped, the grilled cheese melted and browned well, the nonstick coating needed only a trace of grease, the front and sides stayed cool to the touch, and the unit cooled down fast after unplugging. Its one complaint was the short plug cord. That is a single unit, and owner reports are not unanimous about even heat, so read it as a good result rather than a guarantee.

No instrumented test of this model has been published. Nobody has measured preheat time, mapped the surface temperature or checked the dial against actual heat.

What owners report

Home Depot reviews for GD2051B-1X call it right for an everyday breakfast or a larger group, and one notes it keeps pancakes warm while the children get ready. An automated summary of the owner-review pool for this exact model puts surface area at 74% liked, the nonstick surface at 89%, easy cleaning at 83%, temperature control at 75%, and even heat at 76% against 24% who saw hotspots.

That same summary scores durable construction at 43%, the weakest of the five attributes it rated, which lines up with the specific complaints. A Home Depot reviewer says the drip tray falls out too easily and that the gap between the griddle and the frame makes it hard to clean, and BLACK+DECKER’s consumer service replied on that page acknowledging a design complaint. Another roundup independently lists breakage and uneven temperature as drawbacks. The pattern is that the cooking surface performs and the removable plastic parts do not. Nobody has published a failure rate, so treat this as a known annoyance rather than a defect.

Cleaning, repairs and upkeep

Wash it in hot soapy water, rinse it and dry it thoroughly, and use a rubber spatula instead of metal utensils. The manual is explicit about one handling rule: do not immerse the unit unless the probe has been removed, and the probe receptacle has to be completely dry before the probe goes back in. With the Click & Lock thermostat off, the whole griddle can go under the tap.

The parts diagram in the manual numbers three consumer-replaceable pieces: drip tray GD2011-01, the Click & Lock adjustable thermostat GD2051-02, and warming tray GD2051-03. That is unusually concrete for this price, and it means a dead temperature control or a lost tray can be ordered as a part instead of writing the griddle off. The same manual also states the product contains no user-serviceable parts, so read it this way: the plastic pieces are replaceable, the heating element, the electronics and the cord are not. The drip tray’s number carries a GD2011 prefix because that tray is shared with the GD2011 family.

Upkeep is otherwise light. There are no filters, cartridges or proprietary consumables, and Reviewed found oil or butter optional on the coating. No price was found for any of the three part numbers.

Is it worth it?

At or below $50 this is easy to justify. You would be buying the exact model an independent outlet cooked on, with numbered replacement parts and a two-year warranty. Between $51 and $58 it still makes sense: the manufacturer’s own appliance store listed $51.99 in October 2026 and showed the item sold out, and Ace Hardware listed $54.99 the same month with free returns within 30 days.

Above roughly $60 the extra money buys nothing that testing has shown. The commercial channel asked $62.99, and Reviewed displayed a $72.64 Best Buy price for the same unit. Reviewed’s own verdict was that it found no fault, and neither uneven heating in a minority of units nor the short cord goes away when you pay more for this model. At those prices the honest comparison is against removable-plate griddles, which store and wash more easily and which this one is not. Check the store panel above for what it goes for today.

Which model this is

This is the BLACK+DECKER GD2051B, black and corded, GTIN 00050875821866. Retailers and the manufacturer’s appliance store sell it as SKU GD2051B-1X, and a commercial distributor lists manufacturer part GD2051B-1; those are packaging codes for the same unit, not separate revisions. The line is trademarked by The Black & Decker Corporation and licensed to Empower Brands, a subsidiary of Spectrum Brands. The listing here is ASIN B0765XJ31G.

Do not merge it with the GD2011B, a 10 × 20 inch family-sized griddle with a fully immersible base and no warming tray. Roundups mix the two, and one of them also gives this model a 500-watt heating system, which contradicts the manufacturer’s 1500 W. Published heights run 3.0 to 3.7 in and weights 4.96 to 5.2 lb across sources, most likely depending on what each site includes in the measurement rather than any real build difference.
