Summary
A 20V MAX cordless handheld vacuum with a 750 mL bowl, two speeds, a washable filter and a two-year limited warranty, aimed at car, stair, upholstery and workbench cleanups rather than whole floors. Check the model suffix before you buy: the “24 minutes” and “4X suction” figures that circulate for this vacuum belong to the pet version.
Strengths
- Two-year limited warranty, written into the instruction manual rather than just advertised on a listing.
- Bob Vila tested it at 35 AW and reports very little escaped its load.
- 750 mL bowl with easy emptying; Reviewed liked the capacity and placed it second on dirt pickup.
- The crevice tool slides out of the body, adding reach between cushions and into a car seat.
- Washable foam filter and pre-filter, with no bags or other consumables to keep buying.
- Popular Mechanics put it first among seven handhelds in June 2025 for ample power at low weight.
Weaknesses
- BLACK+DECKER publishes no runtime or charge time for the base unit, so most runtime numbers you hear quoted are borrowed from the pet version.
- Published weight ranges from 2.4 lb to 3.5 lb, and no source explains whether it is weighing the bare tool or the box.
- The crevice extension slides out stickily and takes scratches from coarse debris.
- Owner reviews of the sibling pet model repeatedly flag a filter that dirties quickly and a loud machine.
- The battery is sealed in; the manual’s only guidance for a pack that no longer holds a charge is recycling.
- Every repair goes through a factory or authorized service center, and the filter is the only part you can order yourself.

What the testers found
Three outlets ran instrumented tests and reached similar answers. Popular Mechanics, updated June 2025, put it first among seven handhelds, citing ample power without much weight, a straightforward layout and two speeds. Its one complaint was the nozzle: extending it is tricky, the sliding mechanism felt sticky, and coarser particles left scratches on it. It also found that other models in the same test had more raw suction, while this one still had enough power for the home, shop and car.
Bob Vila’s October 2024 roundup of eight cordless handhelds also placed it first, calling it one of the strongest models in the group at 35 AW and noting that its testing indicated very little escaped. Reviewed, which weighs and pickup-tests its nine handhelds, liked the large dirt capacity and the easy-emptying mechanism, placed it second in dirt pickup, and calls it a good choice for small cleanups in a workshop with powerful suction and long reach from the extendable nozzle.
The strongest long-term evidence belongs to a different SKU. Wirecutter’s current pick is the pet variant HHVK515JP07, chosen as the best handheld for pet hair, and the guide’s author has run that one daily for four years with no loss of suction and no damage from drops. Wirecutter measures airflow with an anemometer and puts the useful threshold at roughly 15 air watts at 16 volts. It also notes that a two-year warranty on this model exceeds the coverage many handhelds carry.
Consumer Reports has the base HHVK515J00 in its lab program and rates it on carpet pickup, bare floors, pet hair, filtration effectiveness, crevice cleaning, ease of use, noise, runtime and charge time, but every score sits behind a membership wall, so none of its numbers can be quoted. Its page does confirm a 3-pound weight and an integrated 20-volt lithium-ion battery.
Which model this is
The base unit is HHVK515J00 / HHVK515J00FF: black, 20V MAX, no powered brush, sold at Lowe’s under model HHVK515J00FF. The pet version is HHVK515JP07, a powered head on rubberized bristles that retailers list as a separate SKU. A bundle, HHVK515BPF07, adds a wall-mountable base charger and a spare HHVKF10 filter, and BLACK+DECKER lists it at $123.00.
The Amazon listing behind this page is ASIN B07T17TDLR.
That is where the misleading numbers live. The “4X more suction power” and “up to 145% more runtime” claims sit on the pet pages, benchmarked against the HNV115 4V MAX to ASTM F558, and they do not appear in the base unit’s copy. The 24-minute runtime that shows up in deal coverage is the pet variant as well. BLACK+DECKER also contradicts itself on that model: the specification table on the pet bundle page says “Run Time: 10 min” and a retailer’s at-a-glance field agrees, while the manufacturer’s support article says 21 minutes on normal power and 11 minutes on POWERBOOST. Use the support-department numbers. The same manufacturer page calls the bowl “XL 750 mL” in its marketing copy and 680 ml in its specification table, and Popular Mechanics’ spec box lists the base bowl as 75 ml, which is a typo for 750 mL.
Runtime, noise and charge time
Treat runtime as the weakest-documented spec on this machine. The manual gives no total figure, only a warning light when about 1 minute of charge is left, and BLACK+DECKER publishes nothing first-party for the base HHVK515J00FF. What exists is the support department’s 21 minutes on normal and 11 on POWERBOOST for the pet variant, sitting against a 10-minute specification table on the manufacturer’s own pet page and a “24 minutes” line in deal coverage. Anyone quoting you a single number for the base unit is quoting the wrong model.
Noise follows the same pattern. 74 dB(A) is BLACK+DECKER’s own figure and it is published only for the pet variant, so the base unit’s real noise level is undocumented. Owners reviewing the pet version at Best Buy flag the noise level and the filter getting dirty quickly, and one verified owner wrote that without the attachment the suction was weaker than expected, that hair and dirt had to be scraped up first, and that paying full price is not worth it.
Filters, repairs and upkeep
The filters are the part you will touch most, and they are foam rather than HEPA. Wash them in warm soapy water and let them dry about 24 hours before reuse; Acme’s guidance for the HHVKF10 is replacement every 6-9 months or whenever the filter is worn or damaged. The manual asks that spent filters and the lithium-ion pack go to a local recycling center rather than into household waste. Nobody has published a failure rate for this model, so treat the filter cycle and the sticky crevice tool as known annoyances rather than defects.
Repairability is thin. The manual routes repairs, maintenance and adjustment through a factory service center or an authorized center using identical parts, no service-parts catalog for this vacuum was found, and the battery has no user-replaceable route. The HHVKF10 is the only part you can order yourself, and it is a consumable rather than a repair. Expect routine ownership to mean emptying the bowl, washing the filter every few weeks and tuning the crevice tool back into place when it sticks.
Is it worth it?
For one cordless handheld to cover the car, stairs, upholstery and the bench, yes. Around $75 to $80, the figure Consumer Reports displayed, it is an easy recommendation: 35 AW class pickup, two speeds, a 750 mL bowl and a two-year warranty behind it.
At the $99.99 Walmart listing in October 2026, sold and shipped by BLACK+DECKER, and the $100 Popular Mechanics carried at both Walmart and Lowe’s in June 2025, it is no longer cheaper than the mid-tier handhelds those same roundups ranked it against. Above roughly $100 to $123 you are paying pet-variant money for a powered brush and a base charger that the base unit does not have.
Do not price it against the 12V AdvancedClean+ either. BLACK+DECKER sells a 12V HHVK320J10 with the same 750 mL bowl and the same extendable crevice tool for $69.97 at Home Depot and $74.99 on its own site. The 20V step-up buys runtime and suction, not capacity. Check the store panel above for current prices.
