Summary

A corded oscillating multi-tool with a 4.0-amp motor and Bosch’s StarlockPlus accessory mount, sold as a 32-piece kit. Check one thing before buying: the StarlockPlus interface will not take StarlockMax blades, which need the GOP55-36 instead.

Strengths

  • The StarlockPlus mount grips blades securely and changes them without tools.
  • Variable speed from 8,000 to 20,000 OPM suits cutting, scraping and sanding.
  • At 3.3 lbs it is light enough to work overhead or in tight spots.
  • Bosch build quality and reinforced gearing, with brushes owners can reach.
  • The 32-piece kit covers common cutting, scraping and sanding jobs out of the box.

Weaknesses

  • Corded only; there is no cordless version of this model.
  • The StarlockPlus mount will not accept StarlockMax blades, locking out heavier-duty accessories.
  • Some owners report the tool runs hot during long sessions.
  • The Starlock, StarlockPlus and StarlockMax naming confuses buyers.
  • The warranty is only 1 year, shorter than some rivals offer.
  • No independent lab test of this exact model was found, so performance claims rest on Bosch’s specifications.

Accessories and the limits of the mount

StarlockPlus is the main draw. Bosch’s 3-D interface seats the blade firmly and the release lever swaps it without a tool, which matters when you are changing blades mid-job. The catch is the ecosystem. StarlockPlus blades fit, plain Starlock blades fit, but StarlockMax blades do not; Bosch points anyone who needs those to the GOP55-36. Decide which accessory family you are buying into before you commit, because blades are the ongoing expense.

Running costs and upkeep

The tool itself is a one-time buy, but blades and sanding sheets are consumables. Budget for replacement Starlock or StarlockPlus blades and fresh sanding sheets as you work through the kit’s 25 sheets. Bosch sells spare parts through its replacement-parts and eRepair network, and the brush access is designed so owners can service the motor themselves. The tool is corded only, so there is no battery or charger to replace.

Is it worth it?

At about $219 from Acme Tools, listed down from $275, the GOP40-30C is a mid-range professional corded multi-tool. ToolGuyd called it a better value than the Fein MultiMaster in 2017, though it judged Fein slightly better outright. If StarlockMax compatibility is what you need, buy the GOP55-36 instead.

Which model this is

This page covers the GOP40-30C kit, part number 3601B31010, the 120 V corded US tool. Do not confuse it with the GOP40-30B, which is the bare tool, or the GOP55-36, which is the StarlockMax model.

The US listing uses ASIN B01ER7J976.
