Breville Nespresso Original Essenza Mini: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-05
Summary
The most repeated owner complaint is water collecting in the used-capsule tray and leaking around the brew chamber or lever, usually on machines three to five years old, and the second cluster is blown one-shot thermal fuses that owners cannot reach or reset. Running cost is dominated by capsules: Nespresso’s own Original capsules were $9.00 for a sleeve of ten ($0.90 each) when checked, so a household brewing ten drinks a week spends about $9.00 a week, plus four descaling packets a year and a small electricity bill. The hardware is a fair buy in the $145-180 range, strong below $130 and weak as a standalone purchase above roughly $180, where the machine adds no brewing control as the price rises.
Common problems and fixes
- Water standing in the used-capsule tray, and leaks around the brew chamber or lever — the pattern recurs across owner threads from 2020 to 2026, with several reports on three-to-five-year-old machines, and it is often paired with shots running short and later pump symptoms. Descaling reduced it temporarily in one owner’s case before it worsened again. Nespresso’s own fault list treats “capsule area is leaking (water in capsule container)” as a call-the-manufacturer condition rather than a user fix, and the US manual guarantee runs two years. [1][2][3][4]
- Blown one-shot thermal fuse — two owner threads connect it to descaling: one second-hand unit “was working fine until I tried to descale it”, and a repair video shows the fuse buried deep inside the chassis, not resettable and not reusable, with the owner concluding self-repair is impractical. [5][6]
- Very little coffee coming out — a 2026 thread documents an Essenza Mini brewing only a trickle, with the discussion pointing at the flow meter as the part involved. [7]
- Audible buzz and rattle — the vibration pump is described as buzzy, sometimes with the reservoir lid rattling along with it. No controlled decibel measurement for this exact model was published, so treat this as a character rather than a defect. [8]
- Weak-tasting drink after a pause — the machine has no heat-retention function, and an independent test found that a 10-minute rest forces a full 30-second reheat, so back-to-back shots after a break taste lighter. [9]
- Frequent refills and emptying — the 0.6 L / 20.3 fl oz tank holds roughly ten espressos and the used-capsule container holds six, the smallest of any Nespresso machine. [10]
- No milk drinks without another appliance — the standalone machine has no frother and no hot-water outlet; an Aeroccino is sold separately, and the frother is bundle-specific rather than included in every box. [11]
Parts and consumables
- Nespresso Original capsules — Nespresso US listed its Cosi blend at $9.00 for a sleeve of ten, $0.90 per capsule. One capsule per drink, so this is the only consumable that matters. [12]
- Third-party OriginalLine capsules — the cheapest Original capsule an independent tester could find was 80 cents, and a Peet’s OriginalLine-compatible ten-count carton launched at $7.99 in 2018. Compatible machines lists name BEC220 and the Breville-branded ASIN explicitly, but leak reports involving third-party pods exist. [13][14]
- Nespresso Descaling Kit packet — one packet per cycle, every 3 months or 300 capsules, whichever comes first. Nespresso warns that vinegar or store-bought descalers may damage the machine. No packet price was found in the checked sources. [15]
- Aeroccino milk frother — listed at $109 by Top Ten Reviews in January 2024, and only needed if you make milk drinks. [16]
- Repair parts (pump, flow meter, seals, tank valve) — no BEC220 parts catalogue and no part prices are published on Breville’s US site, and Nespresso’s manual says repair parts may only be kept for five years after production ends. Owners report repair quotes approaching the cost of a new machine. [17][18][6]
Yearly running cost
Capsules set the bill. At $0.90 each, ten drinks a week is $9.00 a week, which is close to five hundred dollars a year, and a daily single drink costs about the same money in a week. Cheaper compatible capsules at 80 cents or $7.99 per ten cut that materially, and the capsule that came in the box is only a welcome assortment, not a standing supply. Add four descaling packets a year at the manufacturer’s 3-month interval. Electricity is small: the machine pulls 1255 W at 120 V only while heating, drops to low-energy mode after 3 minutes and switches off after 9, and no measured energy-per-shot figure was published for this model, so it is not quantified here. There are no filters, no grounds and no subscription.
When it is a good buy
In September 2026 the machine was listed at $179.95 by Breville and by Williams Sonoma, with Target at $179.99, while a Walmart listing at $146.99 sat below the rest. [19][20][21][22] On those numbers: below $130 the capsule lock-in is easy to justify; $145-180 is a fair buy if you already want Nespresso Original capsules and a 3.3-inch-wide body; above roughly $180 standalone the value is weak, because the machine gains nothing as the price rises. The price itself has barely moved since a $149 launch in 2017. [23]
- Nespresso CitiZ — a sturdier, larger version of the same machine with metal accents and a bigger tank and bin that brews identically; the right choice if you are paying full Essenza Mini money and want a metal body, since the $100 price difference was called unwarranted. [9]
- Nespresso VertuoPlus — the choice if you want a mug-sized coffee or hot water; Original capsules do not fit Vertuo machines, so this is a different system, not an upgrade. [25][24]
- Gaggia Classic Pro — the choice if you want to control grind, dose and pressure, or you balk at per-cup capsule costs. It costs about twice as much as this machine. [9]
