Summary

A 2.4 GHz wireless gaming headset for PC, Mac and PlayStation, built around a suspended elastic headband, cloth memory-foam pads and a non-detachable microphone. Check before you buy: this model has no Bluetooth and no 3.5 mm jack, so it needs the included USB dongle.

Strengths

  • The floating elastic headband and cloth memory-foam pads stay comfortable through long sessions.
  • The microphone is clear and widely rated among the best in its class.
  • The 2.4 GHz link is low-latency and stable, with no perceivable lag in testing.
  • Dolby Atmos is included on PC, and reviewers rate its effect above a gimmick.
  • Fold-flat earcup hinges make it easy to store.
  • A long-time user still called it his daily driver after a year.

Weaknesses

  • No Bluetooth and no 3.5 mm jack, so it works only over the supplied USB dongle or cable.
  • Battery life is inconsistent: owners report about 6 to 14 hours with RGB off against a 20-hour claim.
  • Real wireless range falls well short of 60 ft through walls, closer to 13-16 ft in a thick-walled house.
  • iCUE regularly fails to detect the headset or to update firmware, a recurring software complaint.
  • The microphone is not detachable, despite one reviewer guide suggesting it was.
  • One owner reported cushions and glued surfaces coming apart at 12 months, though that is a single account.

Battery life and wireless range

Corsair rates the battery at up to 20 hours, and TechPowerUp measured about 21 hours with the RGB lighting off, falling to about 11 hours with it on; charging from empty took slightly under three hours. RTINGS measured about 13 hours of continuous use, and Reviewed found it held at least 20 hours. Owners are less consistent and report anywhere from 6 to 17 hours depending on lighting and volume, so treat 20 hours as the best case with the lights off.

The advertised 60 ft range is optimistic. Reviewed measured stutter at around 20-30 ft, owners put usable range nearer 13-16 ft through thick walls, and TechPowerUp found the link stable within about 10 m. Keep the dongle in a front USB port or on a short extension.

Microphone, sound and software

Reviews agree on the mic: Tom’s Hardware and Android Central call it clear, and RTINGS rated recording quality impressive with good noise handling. The default sound is warm, leaning on the high bass while missing some low-end rumble and detail, and noise isolation is poor, so it does not mute the room around you.

Dolby Atmos works only on PC, needs the separate Dolby Access app, and reviewers describe its surround effect as modest. Everything else runs through iCUE, and users report the headset failing to appear there, especially after the iCUE 5 update, with fixes ranging from a USB reconnect to reinstalling the app.

What owners pay and long-term upkeep

Warranty is 2 years through Corsair, and Micro Center lists 2-year parts and labor. Ear pads and the nylon headband are replaceable with Corsair’s HS80 Custom Kit at $34.99, while the internal battery has no official user-replacement procedure, so a dead battery means warranty service rather than a simple swap.

There is no subscription. The only running costs are electricity and optional replacement pads or headband.

Is it worth it?

Value turns on price. Corsair’s own US store has shown the carbon model discounted to $89.99 from a $159.99 list, and the headset launched at $149.99 in August 2021. Around $85-90 it is a strong pick for comfort, microphone and low-latency PC or PS5 play.

Near the $150-160 list it is a harder call: this model is 2.4 GHz-only, and Corsair’s HS80 MAX adds Bluetooth and up to 65 hours of battery.

Which model this is

This page covers the HS80 RGB Wireless in Carbon, Corsair SKU CA-9011235-NA, launched in August 2021. The same wireless hardware ships in White (CA-9011236) and in licensed editions such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

It is not the HS80 MAX Wireless (CA-9011295), which adds Bluetooth and a longer battery, nor the wired HS80 RGB USB.

The listing this page tracks is ASIN B0FWRXJR85.
