Summary
A 1.7 L boil-only glass kettle with a borosilicate-glass and stainless-steel hot-water path, one-switch operation, automatic shutoff and boil-dry protection. Check the trade-offs first: there is no temperature control or keep-warm, and owners report mixed auto-shutoff and durability signals.
Strengths
- The borosilicate glass vessel shows the water level and boiling, and the large 4.3 in opening makes filling and cleaning easy.
- The hot-water path is built around glass and stainless steel, so boiling water does not touch plastic in normal use.
- Simple one-switch operation with automatic shutoff and boil-dry protection, with no modes to learn.
- Independent testing boiled 1.5 L in 6m42s at a moderate 66.3 dB peak using 151 Wh.
- The 360-degree cordless base and blue LED heating ring help everyday placement and pouring.
- No scheduled consumables: routine cost is electricity plus vinegar or lemon descaling supplies.
Weaknesses
- Boil-only: no selectable temperature, no display and no powered keep-warm; glass also loses heat faster than insulated metal.
- Not literally plastic-free: the handle, base and lid rim are plastic; only the normal hot-water path avoids it.
- Tom’s Guide found the lid can leak while pouring and water can bypass the steel filter, calling it a burn hazard.
- Owner-review aggregation reports mixed auto-shutoff behavior and units failing after a few months; prevalence is unknown.
- Glass is less impact-tolerant than metal, so a drop is a non-electrical durability risk.
- No official US parts catalogue or documented user-replaceable thermostat, heater, glass vessel or base was found.

Boil speed and energy
Independent testing of the exact GK172-CO variant boiled 1.5 L from 80 F to 212 F in 6 minutes 42 seconds, drawing 1370 W at 113 V and 12.12 A, using 151 Wh, and peaking at 66.3 dB. Five minutes after the boil the water was still at 201 F / 94.5 C, which the tester called only average passive retention. The tester praised the large opening and the fast, quiet boil, and criticized cord storage. At 0.151 kWh per 1.5 L boil, electricity at the EIA July 2026 US residential average of 18.31 cents/kWh works out to about 2.8 cents a boil, or roughly $10.20 a year at one boil a day and $20.40 at two.
Water path and cleaning
The defensible claim is no plastic contact with boiling water under normal use, not a plastic-free build. The vessel is borosilicate glass; the inner lid and mesh filter are stainless steel; the handle, base and lid rim are BPA-free plastic. The large mouth, measured at 4.3 in, makes filling, cleaning and descaling easier. The removable scale filter can be cleaned by hand, and hard-water spotting on the stainless bottom is expected and needs vinegar or lemon descaling. Tom’s Guide flagged the steel filter’s large holes, saying water bypasses it easily, and reported that the lid can leak during pouring if it is not fully closed; the manual also warns to keep the lid closed during operation. The two-stage partial lid opening is intentional per the manual, so it should not be read as a weak spring, and minor condensation leaving the bottom drain port is a design feature rather than a leak.
What owners report
Listing aggregation for the exact model consistently highlights fast heating, simple operation, the glass body and blue illumination, and easy everyday use. A YouTube long-term owner who used the same model at least twice daily for 1.5 years reported that it still works. The cautions are mixed feedback on auto-shutoff behavior and durability, including several reports of units failing after a few months; one verified owner of GK172-CO reported delayed shutoff and overboil during vigorous boiling. These are signals, not a measured failure rate, and apparent lower-edge leak reports may reflect normal condensation drainage. ApplianceChat lists a faulty thermostat, limescale buildup or a loose lid as causes of a kettle not turning off after boiling.
Running costs, repairs and warranty
Routine ownership cost is essentially electricity plus descaling supplies; there are no scheduled consumables and the mesh filter is cleanable. The GK172-CO manual and the COSORI warranty policy state a 2-year warranty that covers defects in material and workmanship and excludes normal wear, misuse and commercial use; support runs through support@cosori.com and (888) 402-1684, Monday to Friday 9AM-5PM PST. No official US parts catalogue or user-replaceable thermostat, heater, glass vessel or base was found, so repairability is limited and unclear.
Price and value
COSORI lists the black variant at $25.99 and the white and green variants at $27.99 (COSORI store, October 2026). At or below $24 this is strong value for a 1.7 L, 1500 W glass kettle with a stainless-and-glass water path; $25-$28 is still very good; $29-$35 is fair and only worth it if the low-plastic water path specifically matters; and above $35 the lack of temperature control and keep-warm makes a cheaper 1.7-1.8 L alternative or a feature-rich model the better buy. Cheaper glass options exist, such as the Chefman Fast-Boil 1.8L at $23.52 (Walmart), though it carries a one-year warranty.
Which model this is
This page covers the COSORI 1.7 L glass kettle. The US listing ASIN B08PP48979 surfaces the identifier CGK-G173-KUS, while the manual, older listings and the independent test use GK172-CO / GK172-01; no authoritative crosswalk between them was found. Don’t transfer evidence from COSORI temperature-control kettles or other glass-kettle listings.
