CuboAi Smart Baby Monitor 3: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-05
Summary
The most reported problem is the covered-face alert, which is over-sensitive: one long-term tester logged 100 notifications overnight for a side-sleeping baby with a hand near her face, and the feature can be switched off. Running cost is $0 a year if you stay on the free Basic tier that starts after the first included year, or from $6.67 a month for Premium on an annual plan, and there are no consumables beyond the optional sleep sensor pad’s batteries. At the $199 Wall Mount Set price it is a defensible buy for phone-based monitoring with the 2.5K sensor and 72 hours of playback, but at the $299 Floor Stand Set price the independently tested alternatives are cheaper.
Common problems and fixes
- Covered-face alerts fire constantly — the clearest complaint on the exact model: the alert is over-sensitive when the baby sleeps on her side or rests a hand on her face, producing a screenshot of 100 notifications in one night. The fix is to switch covered-face detection off in the app, or test the behaviour inside the 45-day satisfaction guarantee before the return window closes. The one-year limited warranty does not cover a software tuning problem like this. [1][2]
- The camera only works on a permanent home WiFi connection — covered-face, rollover and cry detection run through cloud AI, so the unit will not work without internet at all. Password-protected WPA/WPA2 networks only; WEP and WPA-TKIP are discouraged and mobile hotspots are not recommended, which rules out most travel and hotspot setups. Nothing is broken when this bites, it is a design limit. [3][2]
- Nothing works without the phone — there is no parent unit and no screen, so you watch on a phone or tablet and one tester kept a separate parent-unit monitor as an overnight backup. Nothing to fix; it is the main structural trade-off of the camera-only design. [1][4]
- Connection drops, dropped audio and slow boot on earlier CuboAi models — owner threads about the CuboAi Plus and Gen 1 describe unreliable connections, audio cutting out while video continued, and slow start-up. These are brand-level reports, not Monitor 3 defect rates, but they are the failure class most likely to recur. The workaround is the in-app connection-quality diagnostic: CuboAi recommends keeping the score above 80 and warns that a signal-to-noise ratio below 20 can stay unstable even when quality looks good. Firmware has been the historical fix, with releases from July 2025 through August 2026 repeatedly citing connectivity and stability work. [5][6][4]
- Cry detection stops while music plays — one owner reports that playing music disables cry detection, so the camera cannot do both at once. Use the lullabies only when you are in the room. No warranty cover applies to a feature interaction. [7]
- Constant false “baby is not breathing” alerts from the sleep sensor pad — the separate pad has produced a stream of critical alerts and buggy alerts in owner threads about earlier models, and one owner removed it and used the camera alone. The pad is not in the base package and breathing detection is off without it; the exact-model review reported no false alarms from it, so treat this as a variable rather than a certainty. [8][4]
- The floor stand will not stay put — it needs a filled water bag to weigh it down rather than being weighted itself, and the power cable has to be threaded through the stand frame, which was the hardest step of assembly for one tester. Both are setup problems with no service fix. [1][4]
- A factory reset wipes your recordings — resetting deletes the 72-hour playback buffer and the notification-wall recordings. Back the camera up before any reset. [6]
Parts and consumables
- Power cords (part number not published) — two are supplied, one 2 m and one 3 m, and CuboAi’s troubleshooting tells owners to swap cords and avoid extension cords. No separate replacement price was found, so a lost cord is a support request rather than a purchase. [6]
- Mobile Stand Kit — a separate accessory listed at $45 on the CuboAi Canada store in October 2026, and it does not include a plug or adapter. Bought once, not a consumable. [9]
- Sleep Sensor Pad — a separate purchase, not part of the base package, and the only item with a running cost: it needs batteries, plus a correctly sized screwdriver that one tester found was not supplied. No verified price for the pad or its batteries was found in the research. [4]
- Wall mount — included with the Wall Mount Set only, and it requires drilling. The Floor Stand Set ships with a floor stand instead. [10]
Yearly running cost
$0 in year one for the subscription, and $0 a year after that if you stay on the free Basic tier: one year of CuboAi Care Premium is included and starts when you first pair the device, and after it ends the camera drops to Basic, which CuboAi states keeps cry detection, temperature alerts and cough tracking free for life along with the 72 hours of playback. Paying more buys the deeper layer: Premium is listed from $6.67 a month on an annual plan and Ultimate from $9.99 a month, with growth-tracking records kept 30 days on Premium and 90 days on Ultimate, and one reviewer noting that daytime nap analytics need a paid plan while basic night-time figures do not. Electricity draw is not reported anywhere in the research, and there are no filters or other consumables beyond the optional sleep sensor pad’s batteries, so they are not costed here.
When it is a good buy
The Wall Mount Set was $199 against a $239 compare-at on the CuboAi US store in October 2026, and the Floor Stand Set was last readable at $299 against $359 in Fathercraft’s January 2025 update, with Consumer Reports carrying a $300.00 figure for the model. At the wall-mount price the camera, the 72 hours of subscription-free playback, dual-band WiFi and the 45-day return window justify the money. At the floor-stand price it does not, because the tested alternatives below are cheaper.
- Eufy Baby Monitor E20 — listed from $139.99 by Consumer Reports in October 2026 and scoring 88 against the Monitor 3’s fourth-of-eleven placement. The better choice when budget matters more than cloud AI alerts.
- Nanit Pro with Floor Stand — listed from $289.99 by Consumer Reports in October 2026 and scoring 84. The better choice if you want a comparable floor-stand unit with a higher independent placement than the Monitor 3.
- Momcozy 5 Inch Dual Mode BM04 — listed at $170.00 by Consumer Reports in October 2026 and scoring 79. The better choice as a cheaper floor-stand option with a screen and a physical parent unit.
- CuboAi Smart Baby Monitor 3 Wall Mount Set — the better choice at its wall-mount price specifically, for the 2.5K QHD sensor on a 135-degree lens, 72 hours of playback with no subscription, and camera-only growth tracking that the compared set does not offer.
