Summary
A 220 W, 9-speed hand mixer for everyday baking that comes with beaters, a whisk, dough hooks, a spatula and a snap-on storage case, backed by a 3-year warranty. Check the start-up speed before you buy: it jumps to full speed at every setting, and it is one of the louder hand mixers Wirecutter has tested.
Strengths
- Blends cookie dough evenly and whips a fluffy meringue quickly in Wirecutter’s tests.
- Every attachment comes in the box, including dough hooks and a spatula.
- All removable parts are dishwasher safe, and the snap-on case keeps the set together.
- The 3-year limited warranty is well above the 1-year standard on most competitors.
- Consumer Reports rated the sibling HM-90S “Very Good,” with excellent convenience scores.
- Wirecutter has used this mixer since 2013 without complaints.
Weaknesses
- It starts at breakneck speed regardless of the setting; there is no true soft-start.
- One of the louder hand mixers Wirecutter tested, and Consumer Reports rated noise only “good.”
- It slows down on chunky cookie dough and runs warm after kneading bread dough.
- The storage case is fussy to attach and remove, and it has no notch for the power cord.
- Some owners report motor burnout and speed inconsistency after months of use; nobody has published a failure rate.
- The spatula is flimsy, and one owner called the regular beaters less sturdy than the dough hooks.

Full research notes and sources
Speed, noise and mixing performance
Wirecutter named this mixer runner-up in its July 2025 guide after testing 8 of 11 researched models for more than 30 hours of baking. It blends cookie dough evenly and whips meringue quickly, but it took slightly longer than the KitchenAid 7-Speed top pick to whip cream to stiff peaks, and it aerated cake batter less effectively. It slowed down working through chunky cookie dough mix-ins, and the front of the mixer was often warm to touch after use, especially after kneading bread dough.
Consumer Reports tested the white sibling HM-90S and rated it “Very Good”: mixing “very good” on chocolate chip cookie dough, whipping time “good” on heavy cream, convenience “excellent” for controls, beater eject and handle comfort, and noise “good.”
The recurring complaint is the start. Wirecutter says the mixer starts at breakneck speed regardless of the speed setting, with no true soft-start like the KitchenAid. Buttons are easy to press, the beater release is a smooth trigger switch, and the LED display shows a large red number.
Storage case and attachments
The snap-on clear case holds the mixer and every attachment, but Wirecutter found it fussy to attach and remove because the tabs must align precisely with the mixer’s vents. One owner noted the case has no notch for the power cord to exit, so attachments stored with the cord need rewashing before use. All removable parts are dishwasher safe, which owners regularly praise, and the included spatula draws complaints for being flimsy.
Repairs and running costs
The 3-year limited warranty is the standout ownership term; most hand mixers carry 1 year. Cuisinart sells replacement beaters for $14.95 and a whisk for $8.95 directly, though dough hooks were not listed on the parts page. Wirecutter has used its test unit since 2013 with no complaints. Some owners report motor burnout and speed inconsistency after months of use, but nobody has published a failure rate, so treat long-term durability as an open question rather than a known defect.
Is it worth it?
Cuisinart’s own store and Abt both list the mixer at $99.95. Wirecutter’s July 2025 update listed it at $90 at Walmart and $100 at Home Depot, and says $80 has been the historically common price, fluctuating up to $100. At those street prices it is good value for a baker who wants the case, the dough hooks and a 3-year warranty in the box. The research calls it a strong value at or below $80 and weak above $100, where competitors with lower street prices or stronger test data become preferable.
Which model this is
This page covers the Cuisinart Power Advantage PLUS 9-Speed Hand Mixer with Storage Case, model HM-90BCS in brushed chrome. The white HM-90S is the same mixer in a different finish; Consumer Reports tested that variant, and Cuisinart’s parts page lists the series as HM-90S.
