Summary

The DEWALT DCD803B is a brushless 20V MAX 5-in-1 multi-head drill/driver sold as a bare tool: the powered base, four swappable heads, a storage rail and two belt hooks are included, but no battery or charger. It is built for cabinet, built-in and trim work where a normal drill cannot reach, and it is poor value unless you already own DEWALT 20V MAX packs.

Strengths

  • Bob Vila used the right-angle head inside cabinets and the offset head reached screws in corners.
  • Fine Homebuilding’s seven-drill trial rated the head machining and attachment action sturdy.
  • The metal 1/2-inch keyless chuck handles 1-1/2-inch spade holes in 2x wood and 1/2-inch metal holes.
  • The short 4.8-inch base changes heads quickly, and the right-angle head can stack a second attachment for tight access.
  • The 15-position clutch lets you dial down torque for hinges, cabinet fasteners and electrical covers.
  • A user with existing DEWALT 20V MAX packs saves the cost of a battery and charger.

Weaknesses

  • It is bulky with a large pack: Fine Homebuilding weighed it at 4 lb 10 oz with a 5Ah PowerStack.
  • There is no battery, charger or case in the bare box, so first-time buyers pay more.
  • The right-angle, offset and quick-release heads are screwdriving only, not drilling heads.
  • There is no hammer or impact mode, so it cannot replace a masonry or impact tool.
  • Reviewers disagree on the work light; Fine Homebuilding called it dim.
  • Individual replacement heads are hard to price in the US, and UK Type 10 parts are not verified for the US model.

The four heads and what they are rated for

The powered base takes four heads: a metal keyless drill chuck and three quarter-inch hex pieces (right-angle, offset quick-release and straight quick-release). The manual’s capacity table rates only the 1/2-inch metal chuck for drilling; the right-angle, offset, straight quick-release heads and the bare magnetic spindle are listed as screwdriving only. Reviewers have used the angle and offset heads for small pilot bits, but DEWALT does not rate them for full drilling loads. Stacking a second head on the right-angle piece adds reach and leverage but still does not change that rating.

Problems owners report

Owners mostly complain about size. A February 2026 r/Dewalt owner called the DCD803 large and bulky for delicate installation and planned to sell it, and commenters pointed to smaller 12V drivers. Fine Homebuilding found it the heaviest multi-head driver on test at 4 lb 10 oz with a 5Ah PowerStack, against 3 lb 11 oz with a 1.7Ah pack. Beyond ergonomics, no repeatable model-specific defect has been documented, and DEWALT launched the tool in 2025, so there is little long-term reliability data. A partially seated head shows a yellow safety ring, and the manual says never run the tool with that ring visible.

Running costs, parts and warranty

There are no carbon brushes to change because the motor is brushless; the ongoing costs are bits, batteries and optional replacement heads. A genuine DCB203 2Ah battery is a separate purchase at $84.86 (Home Depot, October 2026). Charging is minor: one 2Ah pack stores 36Wh, and 100 full recharges a year at 80% wall-to-pack efficiency and $0.20/kWh works out to about 4.5kWh and $0.90; 300 recharges works out to about 13.5kWh and $2.70.

Replacement heads are proprietary and hard to price in the US. A UK Type 10 parts list shows the chuck head at £75.99, the right-angle head at £93.99, the offset head at £85.99 and the straight quick-release head at £47.99, but those are European listings, not confirmed US Type 1 parts. The tool carries three years of defect coverage, one year of free service and a 90-day satisfaction period.

Is it worth it?

Home Depot and Ace listed the bare tool at $249 and Tool Nut at $248.99 (October 2026), well above the $229 the Pro Tool Reviews launch coverage quoted in 2025. It is strong value below $196 if you already run DEWALT 20V MAX, reasonable to about $225 if you use all four heads, and hard to justify at full price if you only need a drill. If smaller work dominates, the 12V DCD703F1 kit was $199 (Lowe’s) with a battery, charger and bag; if you are starting fresh and want compact installation, the Milwaukee 2505-20 was $179 (Home Depot) bare.

Which model this is

This page covers the US DCD803B Type 1. It is not the 12V DCD703F1, the conventional DCD794B drill/driver, a hammer drill or an impact driver. European DCD803 Type 10 parts are not confirmed to fit the US Type 1.
