Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A compact 1500 W PTC ceramic heater with a real digital thermostat, ECO mode, timer and a remote on current stock, made for small rooms. Check the airflow placement before buying: it does not oscillate, so it works best directly in front of you.

Strengths

  • A true digital thermostat with 1°F steps at a budget price.
  • Independent testing measured a 7°F rise in a medium room in 30 minutes.
  • Quiet for a fan heater, with the low setting especially so.
  • ECO mode cycles around the target to cut runtime.
  • Compact and light, easy to move room to room.
  • Current stock includes a remote and a 12-hour timer.

Weaknesses

  • It does not oscillate, so heat stays in one direction.
  • The manufacturer’s 34 dB noise claim is best-case; tests measured higher.
  • Some owners say the thermostat reads warmer than the room.
  • Touch buttons are not illuminated and the remote needs line of sight.
  • Older or used stock may arrive without a remote.
  • The timer only switches the heater off.

Heating performance

Independent testing is unusually useful for this class. Good Housekeeping measured a 7°F rise in a medium room over 30 minutes at maximum power, and a separate hands-on test reached a 19°C target from 15.9°C in about 30 minutes. The 200 sq ft coverage figure is a DREO sizing claim rather than an independent guarantee, and owner reports cluster around bedrooms, offices and bathrooms rather than whole-home heating.

Noise

DREO claims 34 dB, but that is a best-case figure. One independent test measured 36 dB maximum, and Good Housekeeping measured 47.9 dB at six inches, both above the claim. The measurement setups differ, so do not compare the numbers directly; the consistent finding is that it is quiet for a fan heater, quieter at low speed and more audible at full power.

ECO mode and running cost

ECO does not change the efficiency of resistance heat; it reduces runtime by cycling and modulating around the target temperature. A long-form test in an insulated room recorded 0.27 kWh after 30 minutes and 0.51 kWh after an hour while holding near 21°C. At full 1500 W the heater draws 1.5 kWh per hour before cycling, so local electricity prices drive the running cost far more than the purchase price.

Controls and upkeep

The thermostat, timer, child lock and memory cover the basics, but the touch buttons are unlit, the remote needs a reasonably clear line of sight, and the child lock cannot be set from the remote. Maintenance is simple: unplug and cool the unit, wipe the exterior, and clear dust from the air inlet with a dry cloth or swab at least once a season. DREO says not to unscrew the housing, so servicing beyond cleaning goes to support.

Is it worth it?

Buy it on sale. At the low end it is one of the better compact-heater values, because the thermostat, controls and quiet package justify the premium over cheap basic heaters. Higher up, larger or oscillating heaters become more compelling, and it is worth checking that the box includes the remote if you buy older or open-box stock.

Which model this is

This page covers the DREO Atom 316, model DR-HSH006, in gold, US 120 V, UPC 850049246064, ASIN B0C6FCKQML. The listing’s “2026 Upgraded” label is a title refresh rather than a new model number. Do not confuse it with the DR-HSH006A, the smart Atom 316 variants or the EU 220–240 V versions.
