Dyson Car+Boat Handheld Vacuum: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-05

Summary

The most-reported problem is runtime in MAX mode: the 40-minute figure on Dyson’s US specification list describes Powerful mode, while independent tests put MAX at about 8-10 minutes [3][5][12][13]. Running costs are almost nil because both filters are washable and the machine is bagless, so nothing consumable has to be bought; the money goes on charging and on the docking station and car charger that are not in the box [2][4]. It is a reasonable buy at about $230 or below, and pointless if you already own any Dyson stick vacuum, because this is a V8 with the wand removed [6].

Parts and consumables

Yearly running cost

Parts cost nothing per year: the machine is bagless and both filters are washable, so no filter, pod or bag has to be bought [2]. The only running cost is charging a 21.5 V lithium-ion pack, rated at 5 hrs on Dyson’s specification lists and approximately 4.5 hours in the manual [1][2][4][15]. Dyson publishes no battery watt-hour figure for this model, so a yearly electricity cost cannot be worked out from the research; treat yearly parts spend as $0 and add charging time instead. Budget separately for the docking station or car charger if you want them, since neither is in the box [4].

When it is a good buy

At or under about $210 the value is straightforward, close to the $199.99 launch price Best Buy carried [14]. In the $230-$240 band it is still defensible: Dyson US showed $229.99 against a $299.99 list price and Home Depot showed $229.99 from a $260.95 reference in October 2026 [1][17]. Best Buy listed new units at $244.99-$279.00 and Walmart showed $280 in CNN’s review, so above $280 it is hard to justify against the $299.99 list [1][4][16].
