Summary
A 4.2 lb cordless handheld built from the Dyson V8 with the wand and floorheads removed, sold for cars, boats, upholstery and mattresses. Check whether you already own a Dyson stick before you buy: the motor, the tools and the body are the same machine once the wand comes off.
Strengths
- 115 AW of suction in MAX is the strongest figure in its handheld class.
- Powerful-mode runtime runs far longer than most handhelds, which manage 10–25 minutes.
- The mini motorised tool has an adjustable-angle foot that works around car interior contours.
- Light at 4.2 lb for a machine this powerful.
- Bin emptying is one-touch and tools swap with quick-release clicks.
- Two washable filters mean no consumable filter purchase is strictly required.
Weaknesses
- MAX-mode runtime is minutes, not tens of minutes, and reviewers and owners converge there.
- Trigger-only operation is awkward when reaching into footwells and seat gaps at an angle.
- Bulk for a handheld: CNN called the body too bulky for a dashboard.
- No wall docking station, unlike the V8, and the battery is integrated and cannot be swapped.
- It cannot pick up liquids despite the Car+Boat name.
- It is a V8 repackage, so owners of any Dyson stick already have an equivalent machine.

What it actually is
Dyson sells the Car+Boat as a dedicated car and boat cleaner, but independent testing found the base machine is a Dyson V8 with the wand and floorheads removed and a mini motorised tool added. TechRadar found the box of its review unit said “Dyson V8”; CNN Underscored called it the base model of the V8 without the stick; Tom’s Guide described it as a condensed V8. NBC Select confirmed the motor is the same 110,000 rpm unit used in the V8, against 105,000 rpm in the outgoing Humdinger. The crevice tool and combination tool ship with Dyson stick vacuums anyway. If you already own any Dyson cordless stick, removing the wand produces an equivalent handheld, and that overlap is the single biggest reason to hesitate.
Real run time
The headline runtime does not survive contact with MAX mode. Dyson publishes 40 minutes on its US specification list while its US marketing says up to 50 minutes, and the Dyson UK specification list also says 50 minutes. Dyson’s own footnote only says runtime varies by power mode, dust level, floor type and attachments, so the two figures are not reconciled. In practice: WIRED’s unit, from a partial charge, died after a few minutes in MAX mode; a campervan-site reviewer measured 20–30 minutes on standard and about 8 minutes on full turbo; one exact-model Reddit owner reports about 10 minutes on max suction; TechRadar simply notes runtime is much less in MAX. Treat 40 minutes as the honest Powerful-mode ceiling and MAX mode as spot-cleaning only. Charging is likewise stated two ways, 5 hrs on the specification lists and approximately 4.5 hours in the manual, and the integrated battery cannot be swapped.
Cleaning, ergonomics and upkeep
Cleaning performance is the machine’s strong point. WIRED scored it 7/10 and recorded good results on car mats, seats and the boot with the motorised brush and crevice tool. CNN rates the suction stronger than any handheld it had tested but concluded it is not the best car vacuum because the body is too bulky for a dashboard and the always-on trigger is hard to use in tight corners. The Telegraph scored it 9/10, measured 82.7 dB in the lower power mode and 90.9 dB in MAX, and found the mini motorised head effective on carpet stair treads, sawdust stuck to walls and mattresses. T3 credited the adjustable-angle mini head but listed the inability to pick up liquids as its single con. Upkeep is two washable filters that rinse under running water and must dry completely for at least 24 hours, a brush bar that is not washable, and Dyson’s advice to wash the filter about once a month.
Parts, running costs and support
Ordinary ownership has no mandatory consumables: the vacuum is bagless and the filters are washed, not replaced on a schedule. A replacement post filter is $14.99 if one is damaged, and Dyson lists the mini motorhead at $49.99, the combination tool at $14.99, the crevice tool at $3.99, the car charger at $29.99, the extension hose at $34.99 and the awkward-gap tool at $29.99 (all Dyson). There is no user-replaceable battery listed for this exact model, so a failed pack means a service question rather than a parts order. Dyson’s support page lists the main body, post filter, mini motorhead, crevice tool, combination tool, car charger and extension hose against model 586119-01, which is better parts coverage than many handhelds get. Genuine Dyson tools and replacement parts carry a one-year parts warranty.
Is it worth it?
Dyson lists the machine at $299.99 and its own site showed a promotional $229.99 at the time of this check; Home Depot showed $229.99 from a $260.95 reference, and Best Buy listed new units at $244.99–$279.00 across sellers. Crate & Barrel listed $299.95 and Walmart $280 at the time of CNN’s review. That puts a new unit at roughly $230–$280 against the $299.99 list. The comparison that matters is Dyson-internal: Tom’s Guide put the V11 at $469.99, $270 more than the Car+Boat, but Dyson’s newer V8 Cyclone + Car Cleaning Kit is $299.99 direct with 150 AW, up to 60 minutes, a swappable battery and triggerless controls. At or under about $210, which is close to the launch Best Buy price, the value is straightforward if you need a standalone handheld; at $230–240 it is still defensible; above $280 against the list price it becomes hard to justify, especially since TechRadar finds the V8 itself better suited to handheld work and often cheaper on sale. The break-even test is simple: if you already own a Dyson stick, do not buy this.
Which model this is
This page covers the Dyson Car+Boat handheld vacuum, US model number 586119-01, in silver, the only US colour found. Best Buy carries it under SKU 6611532, Home Depot lists the same model number, and Consumer Reports tracks it as Dyson Car+Boat 586119-01. The Dyson manual carries the same number in its file path. The Amazon listing covered here is ASIN B0DLXGDHBX; no Amazon page was consulted for any figure. Do not merge its performance data with the Dyson V8, V11, V15, Gen5detect or Humdinger, which are different machines despite the shared motor generation.
