Dyson V15 Detect: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-05

Summary

The complaint that comes up most is battery endurance, followed by charging that takes 4.5 hours on paper and 5 in Consumer Reports’ lab, and 8 minutes of run time in high mode — the 60-minute figure is a ceiling, not a working number. Keeping one running costs little: the filter is washable and a replacement is $19.99, and the only large future bill is a spare battery at $150 if the pack fades. It is defensible at or below about $650, fair between $650 and $750, and above $750 you are paying for the laser head and the particle screen rather than for better cleaning.

Common problems and fixes

Parts and consumables

Yearly running cost

Low for a cordless vacuum, and mostly electricity and time rather than parts. Washing the filter at least monthly costs nothing; when a filter does need replacing it is $19.99 from Dyson US support, October 2026, so an owner who replaces one each year pays $19.99 for it. The one large future cost is a spare battery at the $150 Consumer Reports quoted, and no published failure rate exists to turn that into a yearly figure — no long-term owner thread could be read for this research. There are no pods, bags or subscriptions, and no electricity consumption figure was published for any of the test machines, so the charging side cannot be costed in dollars from the research.

When it is a good buy

Dyson US direct carried $849.99 list with $200.00 off applied in October 2026, and Consumer Reports’ model page listed the machine from $729.99; Dyson US lists the Absolute sibling at $799.99 and the gold Absolute HEPA at $849.99. At or below $650 the measured results carry it: Consumer Reports’ near-perfect lab scores for carpet, bare floors, pet hair and edges, RTINGS’ strong hard-floor finding, a 2-Year Limited Warranty and a battery you can swap yourself. Between $650 and $750 it is fair. From $751 to $850 the evidence supports skipping it — PCMag names $499-class machines instead and says a V10 or V11 owner has little reason to move up, and Wirecutter does not pick this model at all. Above $850 the research read here does not support the purchase. [1][3][5][6][8]
