Summary

A fitness-first AMOLED smartwatch that trades third-party apps and cellular connectivity for a week or two of battery life and deep sleep and recovery tracking. Check whether you need LTE or a broad app ecosystem before you buy — this watch has neither.

Strengths

  • Battery life: testers measured seven to eight days with mixed use, rare among AMOLED smartwatches.
  • Health depth without a subscription: Body Battery, sleep coaching, HRV insights, ECG and nap detection.
  • GPS and heart rate hold up for training; PCMag called GPS routes “perfectly accurate”.
  • Built-in speaker and microphone take Bluetooth calls from the wrist.
  • Wheelchair mode tracks pushes, a feature few rivals offer at all.
  • The AMOLED display has narrow bezels and stays readable outdoors.

Weaknesses

  • No cellular option on any Venu 3 variant.
  • Third-party apps are thin, and the Connect IQ store is a separate app from Garmin Connect.
  • The polymer case and Gorilla Glass 3 don’t feel as premium as aluminum and sapphire rivals.
  • Three buttons replace Garmin’s usual five, so navigation leans on the touchscreen and takes learning.
  • ECG setup is multi-step, and the reading can fail until you rest your arm.
  • Nap detection misses some naps, rep counting can freeze or log false reps, and Apple Music and Tidal aren’t supported.

Battery life in the real world

Garmin rates the Venu 3 at up to 14 days in smartwatch mode and up to 26 hours with GPS active, but those figures assume the always-on display is off. CNET’s mixed-use test — workouts, sleep tracking, always-on enabled — came in at about seven days, and PCMag measured eight days with heavy usage and workout tracking. That is still far ahead of AMOLED rivals that need daily charging. Nobody has published long-term battery degradation data, so expect the real-world number to shrink over a year or two of charging.

Health tracking and setup

Beyond steps and heart rate, the Venu 3 tracks HRV, sleep stages, naps, blood oxygen, stress and skin temperature — though the skin temperature sensor is hardware that sat disabled as of late 2023. Body Battery ties sleep, stress and activity into one energy score, while recovery time, VO2 Max and Garmin Coach carry over from Garmin’s higher-end watches. PCMag’s heart rate matched a Wahoo Elemnt Rival in real time, yet averaged 117 BPM against the rival’s 130 BPM over a 30-minute run; Garmin said wrist position could explain the gap. GPS lock was occasionally slow on CNET’s outdoor walks, and Android Central measured distance running 0.04 miles long with elevation about 7 m low over an hour run. Rep counting sometimes logged false reps or froze. Nap detection worked for some naps and not others, and sleep coaching hands you scores without much advice on what to do about them.

Enabling ECG takes several steps — updating the watch, switching it on in Garmin Connect’s setup menu, and adding two-factor authentication to your Garmin account before the ECG app appears. Even then, PCMag’s first reading failed until the reviewer rested an arm.

Apps, calls and music

The Venu 3 has three buttons where Garmin usually ships five, so there are no dedicated Up or Down keys and you will mis-press while learning the layout; there is no home button to jump back to the watch face either. The Connect IQ store for apps and watch faces is a separate download from Garmin Connect, and CNET watched Spotify and Maps4Garmin downloads stall. Music covers Spotify, Deezer, Amazon Music and YouTube Music — Apple Music and Tidal subscribers must load their own MP3 files. On Android, text replies are limited to canned responses while iPhone users get Siri dictation. Call quality over the built-in speaker and microphone is acceptable but muffled next to a phone, and the voice assistant acts as a remote for your phone’s assistant rather than something refined.

Is it worth it?

The Venu 3’s core differentiators are battery life, Body Battery and recovery insights, wheelchair mode, and health tracking with no subscription — not apps or cellular. Under $300 it is a strong buy for fitness-focused buyers. From $300 to $379 it is good value if wellness tracking is the point. At MSRP, $380 to $449, it is fair value only if you specifically want Garmin’s health ecosystem, wheelchair mode or Bluetooth calling; at full price the Apple Watch Series 10 at $399 and Wear OS alternatives offer more apps and, in some cases, LTE. Above $445 it is weak value unless you are committed to Garmin.

Garmin launched both sizes at $449.99 MSRP in August 2023. By November 2023, Android Central noted the watch had already dipped about $25 off MSRP. In PCMag’s May 2025 coverage, Best Buy listed it at $443 and Walmart at $449. An October 2025 PCMag deal article pointed to under-$200 pricing on older or refurbished units.

Which model this is

This page covers the Garmin Venu 3 launched in August 2023, in the 45 mm case with Black colorway and Slate bezel, SKU 010-02784-01. Garmin sells a smaller 41 mm Venu 3S alongside it with the same feature set but a 1.2-inch display and shorter battery life; do not merge the two, and do not confuse either with the older Venu 2 Plus or the Forerunner and Fenix lines.

The Amazon listing for this colorway is ASIN B0CDC6H66Y.
