Summary
A 46mm GPS running watch with a bright AMOLED touchscreen, multi-band GPS and Garmin’s training platform, aimed at runners who want full metrics without a flagship price. The optical heart-rate sensor is the weak point during hard efforts, so budget for a chest strap if that matters to you.
Strengths
- Multi-band GPS with SatIQ tracks accurately and is widely praised by testers and owners.
- The AMOLED touchscreen is bright, sharp and easy to read outdoors.
- Battery life runs about 13 days in smartwatch mode and 20 hours in GPS mode.
- Training Readiness and daily suggested workouts are standouts.
- At 47g it stays light and comfortable for all-day wear.
- Physical buttons plus touch control work well during a run.
Weaknesses
- The Elevate V4 optical heart-rate sensor is unreliable during intervals and hard efforts.
- Firmware updates have caused heart-rate, GPS and battery regressions for some owners.
- Some owners report battery drain after updates, dropping to days instead of weeks.
- There is no firmware rollback if an update goes wrong.
- No full-color topographic maps, only breadcrumb trails and course following.
- The 46mm case is large for smaller wrists.

Heart rate and the case for a chest strap
The watch uses Garmin’s Elevate V4 optical sensor, the same generation as the Venu series. Testers call it accurate with a snug fit, and TechGearLab measured heart-rate accuracy at 96.55%. Owners tell a different story during hard efforts: intervals, sprints and anything with irregular wrist motion come back wrong often enough that multiple owners report needing a chest strap. Garmin support has said it is investigating the accuracy concerns. A 2026 study found the watch’s HRV estimates unsuitable for research or clinical monitoring, so treat wrist heart rate as a training guide rather than a medical reading.
Battery life and charging
Garmin rates the 265 at up to 13 days in smartwatch mode, 20 hours in GPS mode and 7 hours of GPS with music playing. Testers broadly matched those figures: PCMag saw numbers close to the claims, and Garage Gym Reviews got at least 15 days in smartwatch mode. Real-world life tracks how much GPS, music and always-on display you ask of it. Charging uses Garmin’s four-pin connector and a USB-C cable, and a full charge takes roughly an hour.
Firmware updates and reliability
Garmin pushes firmware through Garmin Express and Garmin Connect, and some releases have gone badly. Owners list heart-rate accuracy loss, GPS trouble, battery drain and Training Readiness stalling after specific updates (17.xx, 18.22, 18.23 and 27.09). One owner described a battery that died after a month; others saw smartwatch life fall to three days instead of 13. Garmin offers no rollback, so a bad update has to be waited out. These reports come from a subset of users, but if you depend on the watch for training data, updates are not risk-free.
Is it worth it?
Garmin sells the 265 direct at $449.99, and Best Buy lists it at the same figure (Garmin, Best Buy, 2026). The watch launched at $449.99 in March 2023 and has held that price at Garmin direct, though third-party and refurbished units turn up lower: BuyDig listed an Aqua/Black bundle at $364.99, Garmin UK showed £369.99 (down from £429.99) and Garmin Canada $659.99 CAD (down from $829.99 CAD). The only recurring cost most owners face is a spare 22mm QuickFit band at $39.99 from Garmin; the Garmin Connect+ subscription is optional and core features work without it.
If you want Garmin’s training platform and a bright AMOLED screen and you run with a chest strap, the 265 is easy to justify at sale or refurbished prices. If you need full topographic maps, watch for the 955 or 965 instead: the 265 offers breadcrumb trails and course following but no full-color maps. As a general smartwatch it is a compromise, since notifications are basic next to an Apple Watch or a Wear OS watch. And check your wrist: the 46mm case is a lot of watch, and testers scored wearability poorly for smaller arms.
Which model this is
This page covers the Forerunner 265 in the Whitestone/Tidal Blue colorway, part number 010-02810-01, with the 46mm case.
