Summary
A 42 mm fitness smartwatch with a bright AMOLED display, up to 11 days of battery life and no subscription, built for runners and cyclists who want long battery over voice calls and ECG. Check the firmware before you buy: owners report severe battery drain after software updates, in one case fixed only by a replacement.
Strengths
- Up to 11 days of battery life means weekly, not daily, charging.
- The 1.2-inch AMOLED screen stays readable in direct sun.
- Heart rate held near-perfect sync with an Apple Watch Ultra 2 during runs and weightlifting.
- No subscription: the fitness and health tracking, including Garmin Coach, is free.
- At 36 g it is light enough for all-day and overnight wear.
- Independent testers consistently praised GPS and heart rate accuracy.
Weaknesses
- No barometric altimeter, so stair counting is gone and elevation data on hikes and runs suffers.
- Owners on Garmin forums report severe battery drain after firmware updates; one needed a replacement.
- Sleep and nap detection is inconsistent — a Reddit owner calls it “utterly unreliable”.
- No speaker or microphone: no voice calls, no assistant, no Training Readiness.
- Single-band GPS is less accurate than multi-band units in dense cities and forests.
- The bezel steps down from stainless steel to anodized aluminum versus the Vivoactive 4.

Battery life and updates
Garmin claims up to 11 days in smartwatch mode, 5 with the always-on display and 21 in battery saver. PCMag averaged about 8 days with 2-3 GPS workouts a week, and TechAdvisor saw just under a week with regular GPS use and 3-4 days with always-on enabled; a 30-minute outdoor run cost less than 5%.
On Garmin forum threads, owners describe sudden drain after firmware updates — 35% overnight, battery life down to 12 hours. Some cases were fixed by later updates; one user needed a replacement.
Health tracking and sleep
Body Battery, sleep score, nap detection, HRV status and stress tracking are the daily draw. PCMag notes Body Battery never dips below 5%, which can misrepresent severe fatigue, and its coaching can recommend less sleep than the user’s own average after a long night.
Sleep detection itself is the weak point. PCMag and TechAdvisor both logged quirks such as an extra hour of sleep or slow onset detection. A Reddit owner reports missing nights and gaps in recording after charging, and calls the feature “utterly unreliable”.
GPS and heart rate
Single-band GPS, GLONASS and Galileo is adequate for most outdoor activities but less accurate than multi-band units in dense urban or heavily forested areas. Heart rate is the stronger suit: PCMag measured near-perfect sync with an Apple Watch Ultra 2 during runs and weightlifting. Raise-to-wake, by contrast, was “hit or miss” in PCMag’s testing.
Is it worth it?
Under $200 it is strong value; $201-250 is good value; at the original $299.99 MSRP it is fair next to rivals with multi-band GPS, ECG or a voice assistant — the Venu 3 adds a speaker and microphone for $449.99. Best Buy lists it for $194.99 on sale against a $249.99 comparable value, while Garmin’s own site and Dell list it at $269.99. CNET noted $190 at Best Buy in January 2024.
Streaming music requires a Spotify, Amazon Music or Deezer subscription. The fitness and health features need no Garmin subscription at all.
