Summary
A GPS smartwatch with a stainless steel case, 1.2 in AMOLED display and advanced health metrics, positioned between Garmin’s fitness watches and traditional smartwatches. The $100 price jump over the Venu 3 demands you check whether you will actually use the training and recovery data before buying.
Strengths
- Battery life holds up in testing: CNET and TechRadar both saw about 10 days per charge in smartwatch mode.
- The stainless steel case feels premium and drew compliments from friends in CNET’s testing.
- The LED flashlight with red mode and strobe is a standout feature owners and reviewers cite.
- Advanced health metrics — Body Battery, Training Readiness, sleep coaching — come without a subscription.
- Multi-band GPS with SatIQ delivered accurate location tracking on trail runs without a phone.
- Cross-platform compatibility with iOS and Android, except text replies on iPhone.
Weaknesses
- The $100 price increase over the Venu 3 is hard to justify unless you use the advanced training metrics.
- Android Central found the watch thicker and heavier than the Venu 3 and uncomfortable for sleep.
- Battery life is shorter than the Venu 3 and drops to about 3 days with always-on display.
- The polymer back caused skin irritation after about five days of continuous wear in CNET’s testing.
- No full-color maps and no LTE connectivity.
- The voice assistant requires a button press and Android Central found it understands only half the time.

Battery life and charging
Garmin claims up to 10 days in smartwatch mode for the 41 mm case, dropping to 3 days with always-on display. Independent testing largely confirms the headline figure: CNET averaged about 10 days, TechRadar saw about 10 days with regular workouts, and Android Central landed at about 8 days with 1–2 workouts a week, sleep tracking and tilt-to-wake. Charging takes up to 2 hours via the included USB-C cable. Consumer Reports lab-tested the 45 mm variant at 350 hours (about 14.6 days) with a 104-minute charge, though those figures may not directly apply to the smaller case.
Health tracking and software
The Elevate v5 optical heart rate sensor stayed impressively close to a Polar chest strap in CNET’s testing after the initial sprint transition. Multi-band GPS with SatIQ provided accurate location tracking on trail runs without a phone. The watch runs ECG, HRV status, Body Battery, training readiness, Pulse Ox and skin temperature sensing, plus new health-trend and lifestyle-logging features. The health status feature is still in beta. Watch-face changes require the Garmin Connect IQ phone app, and the UI, while improved over the Venu 3, can still feel sluggish with some actions hidden behind long presses.
Comfort, build and daily use
The stainless steel case gives the Venu 4 a more premium feel than the Venu 3, but it is noticeably thicker and heavier. Android Central found it uncomfortable for sleep, and CNET reported skin irritation from the polymer back after about five days of continuous wear, which went away with cleaning and breaks. The watch has two physical buttons, down from three on the Venu 3, which CNET found easy to forget when long-presses are needed. Gorilla Glass 3 protects the display, not sapphire. Garmin forums report occasional firmware bugs including broken Focus Mode notifications, freezes after reboot and sleep tracking interruptions.
Is it worth it?
At $549.99 MSRP the Venu 4 competes with Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic. The $100 jump over the Venu 3 makes sense only if you will use the advanced training and recovery data. Tom’s Guide named it Editor’s Choice and called it well worth considering despite the price hike. TechRadar says the premium metal body and additional features make it worth the tradeoff. Android Central questions the value given the heavier build and shorter battery life. At street prices around $499, the value proposition improves.
