Summary
A 1080p HDR indoor/outdoor security camera for homes already on Google Home, with free on-device person, animal and vehicle detection and three hours of event video history. Check your winters before you buy: the battery stops charging below 32°F (0°C), even when the camera is wired.
Strengths
- Free person, animal and vehicle detection runs on the device — no subscription needed for smart alerts.
- The magnetic mount makes installation and removal easy; owners and reviewers consistently praise it.
- Three hours of event video history is included without a plan.
- Tight Google Home and Google Assistant integration, and it works with Alexa.
- Battery power means it goes anywhere, indoors or out, with IP54 weather resistance.
- Consumer Reports called the daytime picture about as sharp and clear as it has seen.
Weaknesses
- The battery stops charging below 32°F (0°C), even when wired; cold-climate owners report drain and offline cameras.
- Battery life varies widely with traffic — Google estimates 1.5 to 7 months, and some owners report less.
- 1080p video and black-and-white-only night vision trail newer 2K rivals.
- No local storage and no color night vision; the 1-hour buffer is not user-accessible.
- The included 3.3 ft cable is indoor-rated and too short for most outdoor installs.
- History beyond three hours needs a paid Google Home Premium plan.

Battery life and cold weather
Google’s own estimates tie runtime to activity: about 1.5 months at a busy location, 3 months at typical use and 7 months at a quiet one. CNET’s battery test saw about 3% drain per 24 hours in default mode, roughly four months of life, and Digital Trends noted about 2.5 months at 13–16 motion events a day. Owner reports swing wider — from less than a month on high settings to more than three months, with one owner reporting 50% drain in 3 days despite minimal activity. Nobody has published a failure rate, so treat the spread as a known variable rather than a defect.
The bigger catch is cold. Charging stops below 32°F (0°C) even when the camera is wired, and The Verge and CNET both covered widespread complaints in winter 2022. Below that temperature the camera will not charge at all, so a cold snap means bringing it inside and charging it with the cable. If your winters spend weeks below freezing, plan on seasonal removals or pick a wired model.
Video, night vision and detection
The 1080p HDR picture is competitive but not class-leading in 2026, and the 130° diagonal frame introduces a slight fisheye effect, per TechRadar. Night vision is black-and-white only from six infrared LEDs; Google claims 20 ft (6.1 m) of range, and PCWorld’s testing could not achieve it. On-device detection is the strength: CNET called the free person, animal and vehicle alerts “incredibly accurate,” and Consumer Reports measured a 6.5-second average alert response. Face recognition, branded Familiar Face, requires a paid plan. Two-way audio has noise cancellation, and there is no built-in siren.
Setup, app and updates
Reviewers called the magnetic mounting system arguably the easiest setup in the industry, and the camera runs only in the Google Home app — the legacy Nest app and home.nest.com are not supported. There is no Apple HomeKit or IFTTT support. Firmware is the weak spot: owners in the Google Nest Community and on Reddit report updates that degraded live view, caused night vision problems or took cameras offline, and a 2024 update (1.73c) was blamed for pixelation. Automatic security updates continue, but the long-term support timeline for the 2021 model is unknown.
Repairs, parts and running costs
The battery is not user-replaceable, and Google’s own safety guide warns that disassembly can break the water seal; battery replacement means contacting Google or an authorized service provider. Charging contacts are a known annoyance — owners report cameras that will not charge because of dirty or corroded contacts, and some fixed it by cleaning with peroxide or vinegar.
Optional cloud history is the real ownership cost. Google Home Premium Standard is $10 a month or $100 a year for 30 days of events, and Advanced is $20 a month or $200 a year for 60 days. Continuous 24/7 recording needs a Premium Plus plan and a wired connection. Accessories add up: a weatherproof 5 m cable costs about $35, an indoor stand $30–35 and a solar panel about $59 (2026).
Is it worth it?
At $149.99 or below it is a strong buy for a household already on Google Home. Google Store lists the camera at $199.99 (checked 2026-10-08), and major retailers including Walmart and Best Buy list it at $149.99–179.99. At full price the value is only fair: the newer wired 2K Nest Cams cost $129.99–149.99, the Ring Stick Up Cam Battery is $99.99 and the Arlo Essential is about $129.99. If you need local storage, color night vision or continuous recording without a subscription, look elsewhere.
