Summary

A 16-inch gaming laptop built on AMD’s Ryzen 7 8745HX and NVIDIA’s RTX 5060, sold under the HyperX OMEN name and configurable with several CPUs, GPUs, panels and batteries. Check the exact configuration before you buy, because the 16z-ap100 name covers eight processor and GPU options, three displays and two battery sizes.

Strengths

  • The RTX 5060 runs at its full 115 W TGP here, and CNET found the related Omen 16 competitive at 1080p.
  • Battery life is unusually long for a gaming laptop: close to 16 hours of YouTube streaming in CNET’s test.
  • Two M.2 slots and user-replaceable RAM make upgrades straightforward.
  • CNET singled out the 4-zone RGB keyboard with its WASD highlight as a distinctive touch.
  • The 200 W adapter takes the battery to about 50% in 30 minutes.
  • The 1080p camera, privacy shutter and full port set cover the basics without dongles.

Weaknesses

  • The chassis is all plastic with a soft-touch finish, which CNET criticized on the related model.
  • The 2K panel measured 75% AdobeRGB and 77% P3 in CNET’s test, so colour coverage is only average.
  • Audio is underwhelming, and there is no Thunderbolt 4 or USB4.
  • The 70 Wh battery is modest for the class, and the larger 83 Wh cell is an extra-cost alternate.
  • At full MSRP it is expensive; CNET found the related Omen 16 hard to recommend at $1,800 as reviewed.
  • Nobody has published an instrumented review of the exact 8745HX and RTX 5060 build, so performance and thermal numbers come from a related model.

Performance and which model this is

The 16z-ap100 is HP’s HyperX OMEN 16 series laptop, product number CQ3C9AV_1, and it is sold as a configurator rather than a single fixed machine. The configuration HP highlights pairs the Ryzen 7 8745HX (8 cores, 16 threads, up to 5.1 GHz boost) with the RTX 5060 Laptop GPU and 16 GB of DDR5-5200. The same chassis can be ordered with Ryzen 9 8940HX, 8945HX, 9955HX or 9955HX3D processors, RTX 5070 graphics, and either a 2.5K 240 Hz IPS or a 2.5K OLED screen, so two laptops with the same 16z-ap100 name can perform quite differently. Don’t confuse it with the older Omen 16 generations that used Intel 12th-gen or Ryzen 6000 CPUs and RTX 30-series graphics.

No instrumented review of this exact 8745HX and RTX 5060 combination was found. The closest evidence is CNET’s review of the Omen 16 model 16-ap0047nr, which shares the chassis, the RTX 5060 at 115 W and the 2K 165 Hz display but uses an AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 CPU. That unit scored 7.8/10, with Geekbench 6 results of 12,521 multi-core and 2,885 single-core, Cinebench 2024 of 872 multi-core and 115 single-core, and 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra of 7,202. LaptopMedia lists a Cinebench 2024 multi-core score of 993 for the 8745HX in this chassis and 3DMark Time Spy Graphics of 12,907 for the RTX 5060. Treat the two CPUs as close but not identical, and read the CPU comparison with care.

Display and battery

The standard screen is a 16-inch 2K IPS panel at up to 165 Hz with a 3 ms response time, rated 400 nits and 100% sRGB. CNET measured 400 nits on the related model but only 75% AdobeRGB and 77% P3, so it is fine for gaming and everyday work but not for colour-critical editing. Upgrades add a 2.5K 240 Hz IPS at 500 nits or a 2.5K OLED rated 500 nits in SDR and 1100 nits in HDR.

Battery life is workload-dependent but strong for a gaming laptop. CNET’s streaming test ran close to 16 hours on the related model, and HP claims about 50% charge in 30 minutes from the 200 W adapter.

Ports, upgrades and upkeep

The port set covers 1 USB-A at 10 Gbps, 2 USB-A at 5 Gbps, 1 USB-C at 10 Gbps with Power Delivery and DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.1, Ethernet and a headphone/microphone combo jack. There is no Thunderbolt 4 or USB4. Wi-Fi 6 is standard with Wi-Fi 7 offered as an option, so confirm which radio is fitted. Internally there are two M.2 slots and, on the related model, user-replaceable RAM, which keeps upgrades simple. Routine maintenance means clearing the vents and, eventually, renewing thermal paste; no teardown or repairability review was found for this model. HP gives a 1-year limited hardware warranty.

Is it worth it?

HP’s US store lists an MSRP of $1,999.99 for the CQ3C9AV_1 configuration, which puts it at the top of the midrange. CNET judged the related Omen 16 hard to recommend at its $1,800 review price against the Lenovo Legion 5i Gen 10 at $1,569 and the Alienware 16X Aurora, but more attractive when it dropped to sale prices as low as $1,150. The Omen 16 series itself starts at $1,400 for a Ryzen AI 5 340 and RTX 5050 build. If the all-plastic build and average colour coverage don’t bother you, the combination of 1080p gaming performance, upgradeable RAM and storage, and long battery life is the case for buying it near a sale rather than at list.
