Summary

An entry-level 14-inch Windows laptop built around the older AMD Ryzen 5 40 processor, with 8 GB of RAM, a 256 GB SSD and a 2K anti-glare screen. Check what it actually needs to do: the Zen 2 chip and soldered 8 GB are fine for browsing and office work, but not for gaming or heavy editing.

Strengths

  • The 2K (1920 x 1200) 16:10 anti-glare screen is sharp for the class.
  • Port selection covers USB-A, USB-C and HDMI without dongles.
  • Light and portable at about 3.24 lbs (1.47 kg) on the same chassis family.
  • The backlit keyboard and Windows 11 Home are ready out of the box.
  • The SSD sits in a single M.2 slot, so storage can be swapped.

Weaknesses

  • The Ryzen 5 40 is Zen 2 and performs on par with the older Ryzen 5 7520U.
  • The Radeon 610M cannot run modern games smoothly, even at minimum settings.
  • The 300-nit display is dim and hard to see in bright light.
  • 8 GB of soldered RAM cannot be upgraded, and 256 GB is minimal for 2026.
  • No exact-model review exists; test scores come from other OmniBook 3 configurations.
  • Consumer Reports flags similar-price HP laptops for swelling batteries and slow startup.

The processor and graphics

The Ryzen 5 40 is a Zen 2-based chip, not a modern Ryzen AI or Snapdragon X part. Notebookcheck tested the same processor in the 17-inch OmniBook 3 and found it performs on par with the older Ryzen 5 7520U, with a Cinebench R23 multi-core score of 4841. The Radeon 610M integrated graphics cannot run modern games smoothly even at minimum detail settings. This is a machine for browsing, office apps and video streaming, not gaming, video editing or other demanding work.

Display, build and battery

The screen is a 14-inch 2K (1920 x 1200) IPS panel at 300 nits; RTINGS called the OmniBook 3 display dim and hard to see in bright conditions, and noted a 60Hz refresh rate with no VRR. Build quality is described as decent for a budget laptop, but WIRED’s review of the Snapdragon X version found a plastic chassis about 0.7 inches thick, a cheap-feeling touchpad and weak speakers. Battery figures (41 Wh, 65 W USB-C, and about 8 hours of video playback at RTINGS) come from other OmniBook 3 configurations, so treat them as a guide rather than a measurement of this exact model.

Ports, repairs and warranty

NanoReview lists 2x USB-A 3.2, 1x USB-C 3.2, HDMI 1.4 and a headphone jack, with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4, and no Thunderbolt, DisplayPort, Ethernet or card reader. WIRED reports the Snapdragon X version’s USB-A ports run at USB 2.0 (480 MB/s), which may or may not apply here. The SSD is user-replaceable in its single M.2 slot; the 8 GB of RAM is soldered. HP lists a one-year standard warranty, and Consumer Reports notes a 12-month warranty with 12 months of tech support on a related model.

Is it worth it?

WIRED put the OmniBook 3 line’s starting price at $599, or as low as $519, for the Snapdragon X version (2026); no price for the Ryzen 5 40 hy0017nr was available. Value depends entirely on what you pay. For basic web, office and streaming at a student or casual budget, the chassis and 2K screen are reasonable. For anything demanding, the Zen 2 chip, the Radeon 610M and the fixed 8 GB of RAM put a ceiling on it, and a modern processor is worth the step up.

Which model this is

This review covers the HP OmniBook 3 Laptop 14-hy0017nr, the entry-level AMD configuration with the Ryzen 5 40 processor. The OmniBook 3 14-inch family also ships with Ryzen AI 5 340, Ryzen AI 7 350, Intel Core Ultra and Qualcomm Snapdragon X chips, which have different performance, battery and display behavior; don’t merge reviews of those with this one.
