Summary
A 16-inch mainstream AI PC with Intel’s Core Ultra 5 225H, 16 GB of soldered memory and a 1 TB SSD, sold by HP at $599.99. Check the display before you buy: at 300 nits and 62.5% sRGB it is entry-level for color work and bright rooms.
Strengths
- Consumer Reports measured 17.5 hours of web browsing and 14.25 hours of 4K video playback on this exact configuration.
- The same test rated performance very good for demanding productivity work.
- A 1 TB SSD, Thunderbolt 4 and full-size HDMI 2.1 make it easy to live with.
- The 5.2 MP IR webcam has a privacy cover and supports face sign-in.
- The keyboard has a dedicated number pad, backlighting and a Copilot key.
- MIL-STD-810H durability testing and a 12-month warranty back the hardware.
Weaknesses
- The display covers only 62.5% sRGB and reaches 300 nits, so it is dim and short on color.
- Consumer Reports said the panel shows a smaller array of colors than most tested laptops.
- The 16 GB of memory is soldered, so there is no upgrade path later.
- There is no memory-card reader, no Ethernet and no fingerprint reader.
- Consumer Reports’ member survey rated HP laptops at this price worse than typical for swelling batteries and slow startup speed.
- Integrated Arc 130T graphics rule out heavy gaming and GPU-intensive professional work.

Battery life and performance
Consumer Reports tested this exact configuration and rated performance very good: among the fastest it tested for composing documents with images and heavy spreadsheets, and fast at image editing, video conversion and 3D rendering. Its battery numbers are the standout, at 17.5 hours of web browsing and 14.25 hours of 4K video playback.
The Arc 130T is integrated graphics, so treat this as a productivity laptop rather than a machine for heavy gaming or GPU work. Coverage of other configurations sets the platform’s ceiling rather than this model’s: TweakTown measured 22 hours 20 minutes of office battery life, 10,312 MB/s read and 7,913 MB/s write SSD speeds on a Core Ultra X7 358H model, and only a 1.5% drop over a 30-minute Cinebench loop.
Display
The 16-inch panel runs at 1920x1200 with 300 nits and 62.5% sRGB. Consumer Reports called the color reproduction weaker than on better displays and said the panel produces a smaller array of colors than most tested laptops, while praising the anti-reflective coating and wide viewing angles. It is fine for documents, browsing and video, but it is not a screen for photo or video color work, and 300 nits struggles in bright rooms.
Repairs, upgrades and warranty
The 16 GB of LPDDR5x sits onboard, so there is no memory upgrade path. The 70 Wh battery is not user-replaceable. Storage is the one field the series leaves open, with two slots listed by NanoReview, though that may not hold for every configuration. HP publishes a Maintenance and Service Guide for the 16-ay0xxx series. Warranty runs 12 months, with 12 months of free telephone tech support.
Price and value
HP lists this configuration at $599.99 (2026-10-08), down from an MSRP of $1,209.99. Consumer Reports listed the tested model at $1,130.00, and Laptop.bid lists a different configuration with RTX 4050 at $1,232. At $600-800 the 16-inch screen, 1 TB SSD and long battery life compete against machines with better displays or discrete graphics. At $800-1,000 the soldered 16 GB becomes a bigger limitation. Above $1,000 it is hard to justify unless the 16-inch form factor matters more than the panel.
Which model this is
16t-ay000 is a configure-to-order model inside HP’s 16-ay0000 series, so its specification is fixed at purchase. Other configurations in the series use Core Ultra 7 255H, Core 9 270H, Core 5 210H, Core 5 220H and Core 7 240H chips, up to 32 GB of memory, and 2.5K 240 Hz IPS or 2K OLED 120 Hz panels. Don’t merge it with other OmniBook lines (OmniBook 3, 5, X and Ultra) or HP’s Pavilion, Envy, Spectre, EliteBook and ProBook families.
