Summary

A six-function 6-quart basket air fryer for households that want one appliance for air frying, roasting, broiling, baking, reheating and dehydrating. Check two things before buying: the original basket has to be hand-washed, and some tested and owner units keep a plastic taste.

Strengths

  • TechGearLab scored temperature accuracy 10/10, measuring an average 401.5°F against a 400°F setting.
  • TechRadar’s original no-window test produced crisp, evenly browned potatoes and wings with easy presets.
  • Six cooking programs cover air frying, reheating, dehydrating and baking in one basket.
  • TechGearLab measured 87.8 square inches of cooking area, generous within its 6-qt test set.
  • Ease of use scored 8/10, and the screen-and-dial controls won praise.
  • Programs retain changed default settings, which is useful for repeat dishes.

Weaknesses

  • TechGearLab found a distinct plastic taste in fries and tots even after repeated cleaning and preheating.
  • The original basket is not dishwasher-safe and must be hand-washed after every use.
  • Owners report basket-detection faults, fan rattling and stopping, and cracked handles in r/airfryer and retailer reviews.
  • No genuine replacement basket, tray or handle is sold separately, and support has declined to supply one.
  • TechGearLab measured the shell reaching about 146°F, hot enough to burn on contact.
  • One cooking zone only, with no window, odor filter or app on this variant.

Which model this is

This page covers the Instant Vortex Plus 6QT in stainless steel, SKU 140-3006-01, UPC 857561008866, the no-window, no-filter version of the Vortex Plus family. It is not the 140-3088-01 ClearCook-window model, not the 140-3089-01 ClearCook plus OdorErase model, and not the original black 140-3001-01 four-function Vortex. The ClearCook 140-3088-01 is a different variant with its own accessories, so its dishwasher-safe basket and filter listings do not apply here.

Plastic odor and off-flavors

TechGearLab found a distinct plastic taste in its fries and tots even after repeated cleaning and preheating, and said the problem lasted months on its unit. In a January 2023 r/airfryer thread, owners of Vortex Plus and other Instant models described the same persistent odor after repeated use; a January 2025 owner returned theirs after extended trial runs. Some commenters blamed missed packaging or exterior adhesive, but others checked for both and found no improvement. Nobody has published a failure rate, so treat this as a known risk rather than a defect on every unit. If a new fryer keeps imparting off-flavors after normal approved cleaning, exchange it rather than waiting for it to settle.

Basket faults, the fan and repairs

A Vortex Plus 6QT owner in April 2026 described the panel waking up but cooking not resuming after the basket was pulled repeatedly. A Target-hosted review in December 2024 claimed the plastic actuator tabs for the basket switch wore out after about three months across several units, and the same owner described fan noise and stoppage within 6–12 months. A July 2026 owner said the plastic joining the handle to the basket cracked after about three years, and the manufacturer would not supply a replacement basket. These are individual reports, not a measured failure rate. Never bypass the basket safety switch; if the fan slows or stops, unplug the fryer instead of running the heater without circulation.

Cleaning, parts and running costs

The original 140-3006-01 needs no scheduled consumable parts and no odor filter; Instant Pot says the OdorErase filter fits only the 140-3089-01, so do not buy it for this model. The basket and crisper tray are included from new, but no genuine replacement part number or price has been published, and owners report support declining to sell them. Hand-wash the basket unless the shipped unit’s own instructions say otherwise. Optional Reynolds parchment liners are $2.79 for 30 at Target (October 2026), or about $0.093 a sheet, but fit is not confirmed, so choose one that lies flat and never preheat an empty sheet. A Gourmia three-piece silicone set is $17.99 at Target, but its fit is unverified too. Electricity is the real running cost: at the 1700W rating for about 30 minutes a use, three uses a week comes to roughly 132.6kWh a year, or about $26.52 at an assumed $0.20/kWh.

Is it worth it?

At $70–$85 new from an authorized store with normal returns, the original 140-3006-01 is appealing if you mostly want simple controls and six programs. At $86–$100 it is conditional, given the hand-wash basket and the odor risk; at $110 or more it is weak next to a Ninja Air Fryer Pro AF140 at $79.97 at Walmart or a Cosori TurboBlaze Smart 6qt at $129.99 at Target. Target and Best Buy both listed the exact 140-3006-01 as out of stock (October 2026: $149.99 at Target), so confirm availability before paying near list. The newer ClearCook 140-3088-01 is a different model with its own parts and filters.
