Summary

A compact, lightweight 5-speed corded hand mixer for everyday baking — cookie dough, cake batter, mashed potatoes, whipped cream. Check the power before you buy: KitchenAid publishes no wattage for it, and owners say it is weaker than older KitchenAid hand mixers.

Strengths

  • Owners consistently praise how quiet it is; a Best Buy reviewer wrote “very quiet motor yet is very powerful.”
  • Lightweight at about 2 lb and comfortable enough for frequent use.
  • Adequate power for everyday baking — cookie dough, cake batter, mashing potatoes, whipping cream.
  • The lockable swivel cord sets for left- or right-handed kitchens, and the ejector button releases beaters one-handed.
  • Consumer Reports rated it “Good” in its 2014 lab test, with excellent convenience and very good noise.
  • Replacement beaters are sold separately, which is better parts support than many budget hand mixer brands.

Weaknesses

  • Consumer Reports measured poor whipping time — it is slow to whip heavy cream.
  • Multiple owners on KitchenAid’s site say it lacks the power of older KitchenAid hand mixers.
  • The lowest speed is still too fast for some delicate tasks.
  • No whisk or dough hooks in the box; they come with the 7-speed and 9-speed models or sell separately.
  • KitchenPicked notes the motor struggles with heavy yeast bread doughs, and thermal protection can kick in under heavy load.
  • Wattage is unpublished and inconsistent across listings (60 W in one place, 145 W in another), so power cannot be compared on specs.

Wattage and power

KitchenAid does not publish a wattage for US hand mixers at all — it says they are measured in RPMs instead. The Kitchn’s test unit read 60 W at 120 V, a Best Buy Q&A answer claims 145 W, and the UK 5-speed Classic (5KHM5110) has an 85 W DC motor, but that is a different model. Do not shop for this mixer by watts.

KitchenPicked describes an air-cooled DC motor with thermal protection that can engage under sustained heavy load. That matches what owners report when the mixer meets thick bread dough.

Everyday use and noise

Consumer Reports scored mixing chocolate chip cookie dough very good and noise very good, with excellent marks for the controls, beater eject, handle comfort and stability. The Kitchn used one across cookies, brownies and cakes over an extended period and found it reliable. Owners repeat the same praise: quiet, light, capable of ordinary baking tasks.

Two handling notes from owners: the air vents can blow flour around if the mixer is not angled carefully, and flour buildup in the vents should be kept clear so the motor stays cool. Rinse the beaters right after use — they are dishwasher-safe, though hand washing keeps the finish nicer.

Warranty, parts and running costs

KitchenAid backs the mixer with a one-year full warranty and Hassle-Free Replacement (repair or replacement at KitchenAid’s choice) through authorized service centers; Consumer Reports also lists a one-year warranty. The motor and electronics are not user-serviceable.

The one recurring cost is beaters. KitchenAid sells replacement stainless Turbo Beaters (KHMTB2) for $34.95 a set at WebstaurantStore, with no proprietary accessory lock-in. Otherwise running costs are limited to the electricity occasional baking uses.

Is it worth it?

KitchenAid’s US store lists the KHM512 at $59.99 MSRP, with an April 2025 snapshot showing the white model on sale at $44.99 and the Aqua Sky at $54.99. The Kitchn reported a $49.99 sale in 2024. Under $50 it is strong value for a quiet, light, branded basic mixer. Between $51 and $60 it is fair value, especially if color choice matters. Above that, KitchenAid’s own 7-speed and 9-speed mixers start making more sense; Consumer Reports lists the Breville Handy Mix Scraper at $159.95 for buyers who want more power.

Which model this is

This page covers the US KHM512, the 5-Speed Ultra Power hand mixer KitchenAid currently sells in colors including White, Onyx Black, Empire Red, Aqua Sky, Black Matte, Blue Velvet, Contour Silver, Pistachio, Ice and Ink Blue. Do not confuse it with the UK 5-speed Classic (5KHM5110), which has a different 85 W motor.

The US model’s Amazon listing is ASIN B009VUHLHA.
