Summary
KitchenAid’s largest stand mixer, built for batch bakers who regularly knead heavy doughs or mix for a crowd. Check your counter space before you buy: at 31–34.6 lb it is a permanent fixture, not something you will move in and out of a cabinet.
Strengths
- The 7-quart bowl handles big batches and heavy doughs without strain.
- The 500 W motor has 66% more power than the 5.5-quart bowl-lift.
- The half-speed setting folds nuts and chips into batters gently.
- Bowl-lift mechanics give more room to work under cabinets than a tilt head.
- The bowl and attachments are dishwasher safe.
- It takes up less counter space than its height suggests.
Weaknesses
- At 31–34.6 lb it is a countertop appliance, not something to move in and out of storage.
- The bowl has a single handle, which Tom’s Guide found insufficient when the bowl is full.
- It is probably bigger than most people need; a 5-quart Artisan covers most home baking.
- The large bowl makes mixing small amounts of ingredients difficult.
- Locking the bowl takes a knack: two side supports, then a hard press on the back to snap a spring latch.
- Color options are more limited than the tilt-head Artisan line.

Baking performance
Tom’s Guide baked cake, bread and butter in the 7-quart bowl and found the mixer “capable and sturdy”, with ample capacity for larger batches. CNET named it “Best large stand mixer” in their 2026 guide and praised the half-speed setting for gentle folding. Bon Appétit tested 14 stand mixers in July 2026 and found the bowl-lift “did just as well in our testing as the model we recommend above” — the Artisan Plus — but lost the top spot because most home cooks do not need a mixer this large.
Size, weight and the bowl
The bowl-lift design is the trade for capacity. The bowl locks onto two side pins and a spring latch, a mechanism Tom’s Guide says has “a knack to it” before it becomes second nature. The bowl itself carries one handle, which Tom’s Guide found insufficient when full. At 31–34.6 lb the mixer is not intended to move in and out of storage. On the plus side, Tom’s Guide notes it takes up less counter space than expected despite being taller than average.
Repairs and upkeep
Wirecutter reports that KitchenAid offers a 1-year warranty on stand mixers and sells replacement parts, and that its mixers are repairable: regreasing gears and adjusting bowl clearance are relatively simple tasks, backed by instructional videos and a factory hotline. The exact KSM70SK warranty terms were not confirmed from the manufacturer manual. Routine upkeep is limited to washing the bowl and attachments, which are dishwasher safe.
Is it worth it?
At $530 or below it is strong value for serious home bakers who need 7-quart capacity and 500 W of power. Between $531 and $600 the premium over smaller KitchenAid models is justified only if you regularly make large batches or heavy doughs. Above $600 the value weakens for most home bakers; a 5-quart Artisan or the 5.5-quart bowl-lift handles the majority of home baking at lower cost. Tom’s Guide lists the MSRP at $599.99 (Nov 2024). CNET found it at $530 against a $650 list price (Apr 2026). Crate & Barrel had it at $529.95 on sale from $649.95, and Macy’s at $529.99 from $649.99. KitchenAid direct lists it at $700 with Premium Touchpoints (Bon Appétit, Jul 2026).
