Summary

A fully-loaded hand mixer with nine speeds, Soft Start, a digital display and a complete accessory bundle including dough hooks and a blending rod. Check whether you need those extras before buying: Wirecutter’s controlled tests found it no faster than KitchenAid’s cheaper 7-Speed and harder to control.

Strengths

  • Full accessory bundle in the box: beaters, Pro Whisk, dough hooks, blending rod and storage bag.
  • Soft Start ramps up gradually to limit splatter when folding in flour or icing sugar.
  • Nine speeds give fine control from gentle folding to high-speed whipping.
  • Noise stayed under 60 dB in Woman & Home’s baking tests.
  • Owners report mixers lasting 20 to 25 years before replacement.
  • Non-tip heel rest and air vents positioned to avoid clogging.

Weaknesses

  • Wirecutter found it harder to control than the KitchenAid 7-Speed and more prone to flinging ingredients than its Cuisinart runner-up.
  • Noticeable vibration at speeds 8 and 9 (BBC Good Food).
  • The cord does not retract, which complicates storage.
  • The flat speed buttons with a metal divider are easy to miss by touch.
  • One Home Depot reviewer reported a dead-on-arrival unit that shut off after three seconds.
  • Recurring owner complaints about beater “wobbliness” and being under-powered for tough jobs.

Control and mixing performance

Wirecutter’s trained testers baked for over 30 hours across 11 models and found the KHM926 did not work any better or faster than KitchenAid’s own 7-Speed top pick. The 9-speed flung ingredients out of the bowl more severely than the Cuisinart runner-up. Woman & Home’s weeks of baking tests were kinder: creamed butter and sugar smoothly with no splatter, kneaded bread dough in 9 minutes, and called the KHM926CU “the perfect all-rounder.” BBC Good Food praised the speed range and Soft Start but flagged vibration at speeds 8 and 9 that required a firm grip.

The 85 W DC motor is modest for a hand mixer at this price. Foodal’s 2018 hands-on review listed under-powering on tough jobs as a minus. The predecessor KHM920 manual warns that Turbo Beaters are not for bread-dough kneading; dough hooks are required for that task. If you mostly bake cakes and whipped cream, the 7-Speed handles the same jobs with better control.

Accessories and storage

The KHM926 includes two Stainless Steel Turbo Beater II beaters (oval, no centre post), a 16-wire Pro Whisk, two dough hooks, a blending rod and a cotton storage bag. Attachments are dishwasher-safe and the beaters are self-cleaning by design. The cord does not retract, which at least one review site flags as a storage drawback. KitchenAid sells official dough hooks separately for about $24 if lost. Air vents are positioned to avoid clogging during use.

Owner sentiment and reliability

Owner reviews at retail are enthusiastic. KitchenAid’s US site aggregates ratings from a large owner submission pool; Best Buy’s Contour Silver variant pool shows a high recommendation rate. Top review mentions are speed, ease of use and power. Longevity anecdotes are striking but self-selected: one Home Depot reviewer reports a first KitchenAid hand mixer dying after 25 years, another a 9-speed lasting 20 years. Wirecutter warns about longevity issues only for the Breville Handy Mix Scraper’s silicone beaters, not for this model. One dead-on-arrival report exists. No failure-rate data is available.

KitchenAid operates a mail-in repair service for mixers. Hand-mixer-specific parts availability was not verified.

Price and value

MSRP is $114.99 at KitchenAid’s US site. As of October 2026, Home Depot lists the Contour Silver at $84.94, Best Buy at $84.99 and KitchenAid’s own site had the Candy Apple Red at $84.99 (marked down from $114.99). Consumer Reports lists it from $109.99. There are no recurring costs beyond ingredients; all accessories are included and there are no consumables.

At sale prices around $85 the bundle is strong value: dough hooks, blending wand and nine speeds undercut Wirecutter’s 7-Speed top pick. At full $114.99 MSRP the value weakens because KitchenAid’s own cheaper 7-Speed out-classes it in Wirecutter’s testing. Buy at sale prices for the accessory bundle; pay MSRP only if dough hooks and the blending rod are must-haves.
