Summary
A 36V (two 18V) brushless sidewinder circular saw kit for people already invested in Makita’s LXT battery platform, with corded-class cutting power and two 5.0Ah batteries in the box. Check your battery shelf before you buy: the saw needs two 18V packs at once, and at $449 from Acme Tools and Home Depot (October 2026) it makes sense mainly if you already own Makita 18V batteries.
Strengths
- Corded-class power: Journal of Light Construction found no noticeable difference against Makita’s corded 5007MG.
- Cut quality earns top marks: Pro Tool Reviews gave it 10.0/10.
- The kit is complete: two 5.0Ah batteries, 45-minute dual-port charger, 24T blade, dust nozzle, hex wrench and bag.
- Die-cast magnesium base and guard keep weight at 10.5 lbs with batteries.
- Batteries are shared with Makita’s 18V LXT platform.
- 3-year limited warranty on tool, battery and charger.
Weaknesses
- It needs two 18V batteries at once and will not run on one.
- No rafter hook in the box; the optional hook is part 199386-8.
- The handle rises too high at full blade depth, which JLC found uncomfortable across full sheets.
- The blade guard handle is too small to hold with the front hand on plunge cuts.
- Dust collection needs a shop vacuum; there is no integrated dust bag.
- Body panels are plastic, Bob Vila’s one build con.

Cutting performance and build
Journal of Light Construction’s 2019 hands-on called the saw super-fast with tons of power, and found no noticeable difference in power between it and its corded version, the Makita 5007MG. Users of corded Makita saws will find the layout familiar. Bob Vila’s 2023 tester made quick work of crosscuts on studs, called long rips fast, smooth and accurate, and saw no bogging or heat buildup over an hour of repeated cuts; given the choice between this saw and a corded 7-1/4" model, the tester said they would pick the Makita in most nonshop situations. Pro Tool Reviews measured a full 2-1/2" rip cut through 4x PT in 13.54 seconds, third fastest at the time and 5 seconds quicker than the rear-handle XSR01.
The base, blade guard and blade cover are die-cast magnesium, which keeps the kit at 10.5 lbs with batteries. The body panels are plastic, the one build con in Bob Vila’s review. Dual LED lights cover the work area, and the blade-right layout is unusual for a cordless saw, most cordless competitors being blade-left, but it matches Makita’s corded saws.
Batteries, runtime and charging
The saw runs on two 18V LXT packs in series to make 36V, and it will not operate on a single battery. Makita claims up to 610 cross-cuts per charge in 2x4 SPF with the two 5.0Ah packs. The included DC18RD dual-port rapid charger recharges two 5.0Ah batteries in 45 minutes, and 3-stage LED gauges on the tool and batteries show remaining charge. JLC recommends four batteries and the twin-port charger to eliminate downtime. XPT sealing gives dust and water resistance, though the saw is not fully waterproof. A tether notch is built in; the tether itself is sold separately.
Handling and ergonomics
JLC’s tester flagged the ergonomics at full depth: the handle rises too high when blade depth is increased, which gets uncomfortable when reaching across full sheets, and the safety switch is awkward to engage from that height. The blade guard handle is too small to hold along with the front hand for plunge cuts or sticky guards. In r/Makita, one user notes the saw is big relative to expectations. The dust port takes the included nozzle plus a shop vacuum; there is no self-contained dust bag.
Is it worth it?
Kit pricing in October 2026: Acme Tools and Home Depot list the XSH06PT at $449, USA Tools Inc lists a $519.95 MSRP, and ToolNut has a $379 sale price against the same $449 regular. Global Industrial lists the bare XSH06Z at $259.95. For context, Pro Tool Reviews listed the 2-battery kit at $339 and the 4-battery XSH06PT1 at $349 at 2019 launch, and one r/Makita user reports a $239 purchase in May 2025.
At or under $250 the kit is a strong buy. From $251 to $350 it is fair value. Between $351 and $450 it is full MSRP and only makes sense if you are already invested in Makita 18V LXT batteries; above $450 the value weakens. Recurring costs are Makita’s own consumables: replacement BL1850B 5.0Ah batteries, 7-1/4" blades, the optional rafter hook (199386-8) and rip fence (164095-8), and JLC advises budgeting for four batteries total. If you are not on LXT, Milwaukee’s M18 Fuel 2834 kit is also $449, with a 12.0Ah battery and a 5-year warranty; Makita covers tool, battery and charger for 3 years.
Which model this is
XSH06PT is the 2-battery kit; XSH06Z is the bare tool; XSH06PT1 is the 4-battery kit. It is not the XSH01 (previous generation), the XSH07 (which adds AWS wireless dust-extractor start), the XSH08Z (guide-rail base) or the XSR01PT (rear-handle variant).
The US retail ASIN for this kit is B07GZJG3K2.
