Summary

An 18V brushless quarter-inch impact driver sold as a two-battery starter kit, aimed at DIY framing, decking, cabinetry and general fastening. Check the real checkout price and confirm the charger and bag inside the box, because the kit’s pack-ins differ across release documents.

Strengths

  • Compact and light for ordinary screw driving: a 4.72 in head and 2.0 lb bare weight help in cabinets and overhead work.
  • A well-equipped basic kit with two genuine fuel-gauge 2Ah packs, a compatible charger and a soft bag.
  • Owners describe precise trigger control on delicate screws and good balance across multiple projects.
  • Battery-family flexibility: compact 18V and physically larger MultiVolt packs both fit the same tool.
  • Published factory repair information, including a 68-page owner’s manual and an exploded parts list with exact part codes.
  • Lifetime limited warranty on the tool body, stronger on paper than many budget drivers.

Weaknesses

  • One driving mode only, with no self-tapper, three-speed selector or torque clutch to limit overtightening.
  • The two included 2Ah packs carry limited energy for a job heavy in long structural screws.
  • The 1/4-in hex collet can fail to lock or drop bits with the wrong shank shape or length.
  • It is loud and percussive once fasteners load up, and the manual advises ear protection for sustained use.
  • The tool stops by design under overload, an overheated battery or five minutes of continuous trigger use.
  • Kit pack-ins changed between editions, so the charger and bag in the box may not match the listing.

Motor, torque and speed

The 1,549 in-lb figure is a manufacturer rating on specified high-tension bolt conditions, and rpm, torque and impacts are not simultaneous constant outputs under all loads. No independent test of the WH18DEX’s screw-driving speed, fastening torque, noise or thermal runtime was found. Pro Tool Reviews published a feature and design overview of this exact model, but its instrumented tests cover the WH18DC Triple Hammer and the older WH18DBFL2, so those measured numbers do not transfer. Treat the paper specs as an upper bound rather than a measured result.

Charging, batteries and running costs

Each 2Ah pack stores about 36Wh nominal, so the two included packs together hold about 72Wh. On an illustrative schedule of one discharged 2Ah pack per working day, 150 days a year, at an assumed 80% charging efficiency and $0.20/kWh, the wall draw is about 6.75 kWh, or roughly $1.35 a year; using both packs daily would roughly double that to 13.5 kWh and about $2.70. Those are calculations, not metered results, and charger standby use varies.

A genuine BSL1820M replacement pack is listed at $69 at Acme Tools (October 2026) and $69.99 at HPM Building Supply for the same 377797M. Treat a new battery as an unplanned expense, not an annual one; the platform has no mandatory subscription, filter, oil or refill cartridge.

Which model this is

This page covers the 18V brushless impact driver WH18DEX and its US two-battery kit, WH18DEXM. The more advanced Metabo HPT WH18DC Triple Hammer is a separate tool with selectable modes and a hard case, and the KC18DEXQB combo pairs a DS18DEX 1/2-inch drill with an impact driver. The current kit listing names a UC18YFSL charger and a 378501M soft bag, while the 2022 parts diagram names a UC18YKSL charger and a 375801M bag. Order the retail kit model WH18DEXM, then verify the actual charger and bag in the delivered carton rather than trusting the listing, and do not confuse it with the drill-and-driver KC18DEXQB combo or the bare WH18DEX (NN) tool.

Parts, repairs and warranty

Worn or broken bits are the routine consumable, so the manual warns to replace them and to use only impact-ready 1/4-in hex bits and compatible adapters. Factory parts are documented: retaining ring 330619, guide spring 370581, guide sleeve 376528, anvil 378647, hammer 378646, hammer spring 335316, hammer case 378650, spindle 372208, rotor pinion assembly 378641, DC-speed control switch 378620 and wiring assembly 378651. A UK dealer lists the guide sleeve at £2.99 including VAT and the switch at £17.99 including VAT, but those are foreign prices and no dependable US spare or labour figure was found. Metabo HPT covers the tool body for life against manufacturing defects, each battery for two years and the charger for one, and the manual directs repairs to authorised service centres.

Is it worth it?

Price is the whole decision. Documented offer snapshots for the two-2Ah kit span about $74.92 at Walmart and $104.89 at Premier Tool Supply, with Lowe’s at $179 and a historical $99 promotion in August 2026. At $75 or less, new, genuine and with a full kit and seller warranty, it is exceptionally attractive; $76–$95 is good value; $96–$115 is reasonable if platform compatibility matters; $116–$149 is weak, and at that level the two-tool KC18DEXQB drill-plus-impact combo near $149 at Walmart is the better starting point. From $150 to $179 the kit competes poorly with the WH18DC Triple Hammer kit at $199 at Lowe’s, which adds selectable modes and a hard case. If you are already on the Ryobi ONE+ platform, the PSBID02K2 kit at $139 at Home Depot is an alternative, though the two were not benchmarked head to head.
