Momcozy BM04 5-Inch Dual-Mode Smart Baby Monitor: problems, parts and running costs

Checked: 2026-10-05

Summary

The BM04 is a 5-inch 1080p monitor with two paths to the same camera: the handheld links straight to it over FHSS with no WiFi, or the camera joins a 2.4 GHz network and streams to the Momcozy app on a phone. The recurring problems are therefore app and pairing problems rather than picture problems, plus a camera that one five-month tester had to reset roughly every eight weeks, and a lowest brightness setting that is still too bright in a dark room. Running cost is close to nothing if you record to a card you buy once, and the only recurring cost anyone has documented is an optional cloud subscription. It is a good buy at or below about $150 and still reasonable near $170 if you mainly watch at home; above that the app questions and the conflicting warranty wording argue for comparing other monitors first.

Common problems and fixes

Parts and consumables

Yearly running cost

Close to zero for most owners. The BM04 has no filters, pods or scheduled consumables, and the two USB-C adapters in the box cover both units, so the only running cost is electricity: the system is rated 5 V, 10 W, with the camera on continuous mains power and the handheld on its 5000 mAh battery, charged roughly once a night. No source publishes measured wall draw or an annual kWh figure for this model, so a defensible yearly electricity number cannot be computed — treat it as charging power only. Local recording needs one card, bought once, and no price for it was captured. The single recurring line is the optional cloud subscription listed by Consumer Reports at $0–$9.99 a month, which nobody has confirmed is required for any advertised recording function; budget for it only if you want off-card storage. If a second room is needed later, the add-on camera is a one-off purchase, not an annual cost. [3][9][1][11]

When it is a good buy

Retail prices checked in October 2026, outside the big marketplace: $169.99 at Babylist, $189.99 on Momcozy’s own US store for the single-camera kit, and $170.00 on the Consumer Reports comparison listing. The same Momcozy product page has also been indexed at $169.99, so treat that figure as unstable. The two-camera bundle was $259.99 on Momcozy’s US store, and the two-camera upgrade is cheaper as one kit plus an $89.99 add-on camera than as the bundle. [10][1][9][12][11]

Alternatives:

Before you rely on either warranty figure: Momcozy’s store page says 2 years and its policy text runs up to 3 years by category with battery-operated products at 2, while the BM04 instruction manual says 12 months and an independent tester reports a 1-year warranty. Returns are 30 days for unused, unopened kit with intact packaging and proof of purchase, with return shipping paid by you. [1][15][6]
