Summary

A semi-automatic espresso, cappuccino and latte maker that automates dosing and milk frothing at a budget price, aimed at people who want one-touch milk drinks and can live with weak straight espresso. Check the upkeep before buying: the frother’s narrow tubes need a cleaning cycle after every milk use.

Strengths

  • One-touch controls automate espresso dosing and milk frothing, which manual machines at the same price do not.
  • The removable milk reservoir can be stored in the refrigerator.
  • Compact footprint for a pump espresso machine.
  • Milk-based drinks come out noticeably better than straight espresso.
  • Replacement parts are cheap and available from third-party sellers.
  • Some owners report years of reliable use.

Weaknesses

  • Weak, inconsistent, sometimes burnt-tasting espresso in two independent tests.
  • Brew temperature swings between shots.
  • No pressure gauge makes dialing in grind size hard.
  • The frother uses narrow tubes and small plastic parts; one specialist estimates failure within 6–12 months.
  • Skipping the after-milk cleaning cycle lets curdled milk build up that is nearly impossible to remove.
  • Very fine grounds clog the portafilter.

Espresso quality

CNET’s 2015 instrumented test measured TDS between 6.8% and 10.1% against a roughly 14% target, with brew temperature swinging from 198°F to 207°F between shots. TechGearLab scored the machine 4.1/10 in 2017, last in its test field, and called the espresso “weak, burnt tasting.” Light roasts came out sour, very fine grounds clogged the portafilter, and milk drinks tasted better than straight shots. The thermoblock is set a little low, which flattens the taste, and there is no pressure gauge to help dial in a grind.

Milk frother and upkeep

The defining feature is the automatic frother built into the removable milk reservoir, with Cappuccino and Latte settings for more or less foam. It takes a cleaning cycle after every milk use: fill the reservoir with water, set the froth knob to Clean, and hold the Latte button. A specialist reviewer calls that burden enough to undo the automation, and estimates the narrow tubes and small plastic parts may fail within 6–12 months. One skipped cycle can leave curdled milk that is nearly impossible to remove. Routine upkeep is cleaning the frothing tube after each milk use, descaling with vinegar, and cleaning the portafilter.

Parts, repairs and warranty

Third-party sellers carry exact-model parts: a milk frothing tube at $1.50, a silicone tube at $1.59, a double-shot filter at $4.55, a portafilter at $12.56, and the water reservoir. iFixit documents a repair for the all-LEDs-blinking error, caused by broken water flow sensor wires and fixable with soldering. The machine must go to an authorized Mr. Coffee service center; the manual lists 1-800-672-6333 for US service locations. Warranty is one year limited against manufacturing defects, and only for units bought from Mr. Coffee or authorized sellers.

Is it worth it?

At used or open-box prices under $100, this can make sense for one-touch milk drinks if you accept the espresso limits and the frother risk. Between $101 and $150 it is fair value, but a simple pump machine with a standalone frother gives better espresso and durability. At the original $200 list, value is weak: CNET noted the De’Longhi Dedica at $300 was a clearly better espresso machine. Above $200 it is poor value now that the line is discontinued and newer Mr. Coffee models exist. Newegg listed it at $190.42 in December 2020, and eBay used and open-box listings have run from $49.98 to $178.63.

Which model this is

This page covers the BVMC-ECMP1000 series, sold as the silver and black BVMCECMP1000RB. The white ECMP1102 and red ECMP1106 share the same internals. The same machine is rebadged as the Oster Prima Latte, Breville PrimaLatte VCF045 and VCF046, Sunbeam EM5000, Vitek VT-1514, VT-1516 and VT-1517, BEEM 1110SR and Silvercrest SEMM 1470 A1. The original is discontinued on Mr. Coffee’s own site. It is not the newer One-Touch CoffeeHouse (BVMC-EM6701SS) or the Compact Espresso Maker (BVMC-PSTX95). ASIN B007K9OIMU.
