NutriBullet Ultra Personal Blender: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-06
Summary
The clearest recurring complaint is noise: Consumer Reports tested the exact NB50500 and places it in the loud 70–89 dBA band even though NutriBullet markets it as its quietest single-serve design, and the sealed cups cannot take hot, warm or carbonated ingredients. Running costs are low because there is no filter, pod or routine consumable — the only priced part found is a 24-oz handled cup and lid at $16.99 from NutriBullet, bought only when a cup or lid wears or is lost. It is a good buy at $100 or less, fair around $130, and poor value above $150.
Common problems and fixes
- It is loud despite the “quietest” marketing — NutriBullet shifts the sound toward lower frequencies, but Consumer Reports measured the exact NB50500 and classes its noise as loud at 70–89 dBA, and exact-model owners on Best Buy and ShopSavvy still describe it as loud or high-pitched. There is no fix: treat it as a normal-loudness blender, not an early-morning silent one. This is a design property, not a warranty defect. [5][7][9]
- The sealed cups cannot blend hot, warm, carbonated or effervescent ingredients — NutriBullet says ingredients must start at 70°F (21°C) or cooler, and the manual limits continuous blending to one minute, so hot soup and fizzy drinks are out. Workaround: cool ingredients first, blend in short bursts, and never blend ice without enough liquid. This is a safety limit, not a fault covered by warranty. [4]
- Older NutriBullet cups and blades do not fit — the Ultra is a new design, and an exact-model Best Buy owner reports the older cups and blades will not attach. Workaround: use genuine Ultra cups and blades, which NutriBullet sells separately. Nothing here is covered by the base warranty. [1][7]
- Isolated durability failures — exact-model owner reports include smoke after about seven months of two smoothies a day, a to-go lid shedding plastic pieces after three uses, and one Costco owner’s unit failing after a single use with the fix traced to the extractor assembly. These are signals, not a failure rate. Workaround: register the product, keep the motor-base vents clear, and use the 5-year blade warranty if the extractor assembly fails. [7][8]
- The blade can be hard to remove after prolonged use — owner-review aggregation notes difficult blade removal once the machine has been used for a while. Workaround: hand-clean the blade promptly instead of letting residue dry on, and inspect the gasket. NutriBullet says a worn, torn or loose gasket is the reason to replace the blade assembly. [3][9]
- The base warranty is only one year — the motor base carries a standard 1-year warranty while the included Ultra Rapid Extractor Blade gets a separate 5-year limited warranty, and repairs are module swaps rather than component-level. Workaround: keep the receipt and register the blade separately, since it is covered far longer than the base. [2][5]
- Cups and lids have dishwasher limits — they are dishwasher-safe but should not go on the bottom rack or through a heat or sanitize cycle, and the blade should be hand-cleaned. Workaround: top-rack wash only for cups and lids, hand-wash the blade, and inspect cups for cracking or cloudiness. [3][4]
- Strong suction feet make the base awkward to move — Epicurious notes the feet improve stability during blending but make the base harder to lift and store. Workaround: slide the base rather than lifting it, and keep the feet and counter clean so the suction releases. Not a defect. [6]
Parts and consumables
- 24-oz handled travel cup with lid — $16.99 at NutriBullet in October; bought when the original cup or lid wears, cracks or is lost. [1]
- Ultra Rapid Extractor Blade — no separate replacement price was surfaced; replace the whole assembly when the gasket is worn, torn or loose, and it carries a 5-year limited warranty. [2][3]
- No routine consumables — the Ultra takes no filter, pod or capsule, and NutriBullet sells genuine replacement cups and newer Ultra Plus attachments if you want more. [1]
- Older NutriBullet cups and blades — not a spare part for this model, because the Ultra is a new design and older accessories do not fit. [7]
Yearly running cost
Parts and consumables: $0 in a normal year. The Ultra has no filter, pod or routine consumable to replace, and the only priced part found is the $16.99 24-oz handled cup and lid at NutriBullet, which most owners buy only if a cup or lid wears or is lost. Electricity: not enough data. The motor is rated at 1200 W, but the sources give no blend duration, no uses per week and no energy price, so no yearly kWh or dollar figure can be computed. Subscriptions: none — the machine has no app or recurring service.
When it is a good buy
- $90 or less — excellent. Community deal evidence around $89 and a Costco bundle at $90.77 make this a genuine deal zone for a 1200 W personal blender. [8]
- $91–110 — very good. The market context sits near $100, which is attractive for the compact form, the 30-second automatic cycle and the 5-year blade warranty. [1][5]
- $111–130 — fair. NutriBullet’s own standard listing at $129.99 and Walmart’s at $126 are defensible but no longer a bargain. [1][10]
- $131–150 — weak unless the seller includes a materially richer bundle; clearance listings start around $131.99. [7]
- Above $150 — poor value. A $165 listing for the stainless NB50500SS is hard to justify for the standard configuration. [10]
Alternatives worth considering:
- NutriBullet Pro 900 — the cheaper value pick when the Ultra interface and lower-frequency sound do not matter and you only need the frozen-fruit performance. [1]
- A larger Ninja-style countertop blender — the better choice for family batches or frequent full-size blending, where the Ultra’s 32-oz maximum is limiting. [1]
