Problems, parts and running costs

Summary

A one-gallon fountain for multi-pet homes, with a stainless bowl and cone, five interchangeable spout rings and carbon plus foam filtration. Check the filter budget and your patience with assembly before you buy: PetSafe’s own schedule is a carbon filter every 2-4 weeks, and the warranty is voided if the pump is not cleaned.

Strengths

  • A 128 oz open bowl with 360-degree access, so several pets can drink at once from any side.
  • Carbon and foam filters both ship in the box, and both have published part numbers.
  • The pump is a published, user-replaceable part (PAC00-13206); owners report buying replacements straight from Drinkwell.
  • One-year warranty plus a 45-day return window from PetSafe direct.
  • Everything except the pump goes in the dishwasher.

Weaknesses

  • Assembly draws the sharpest independent criticism: Wirecutter called the Drinkwell 360 a nightmare to put together, and cats.com lists more challenging assembly for this stainless unit.
  • The three plastic cord clips that hold the cone are the weak point in that complaint.
  • Each added spout thins the flow at every spout, so five streams means five weak streams.
  • Weekly cleaning is expected, and the small channel and filter placement make it clog more readily than comparable fountains.
  • Falling water is loud at one stream on maximum flow, and owners report a pump less muffled than the Drinkwell Seascape.
  • The 14.3 × 14.3 × 9.3 in footprint eats floor space, and the minimum water line is hard to see on the stainless bowl.

Assembly and the cone clips

Wirecutter, which considered 39 models and tested 21 fountains over two weeks with repeated assembly and disassembly, says the Drinkwell 360 “was a nightmare to assemble” and that the plastic clasps holding the centerpiece “were not secure enough to keep the fountain together during assembly or use.” Its entry does not say whether the fountain it handled was the stainless one, so treat that as a verdict on the Drinkwell 360 line. The assembly complaint itself does land on this model: cats.com tested the stainless fountain and listed more challenging assembly among its dislikes.

PetSafe’s own Operating Guide makes the criticism structural. It states that the fountain is built from several plastic and metal parts and that three plastic cord clips are required to hold the cone in place. Set aside ten minutes and a second pair of hands.

Streams and flow

Five spout rings are the headline feature and the weakest part of the spec sheet. Wirecutter found the extra rings that change flow from the top “provided little practical benefit.” A Chewy product Q&A for 360 fountains describes the same physics from the other side: the more spouts on top, the weaker the flow from each one, and it recommends trying a ring with one fewer opening. If you are buying this for five streams, expect one or two in practice. The twist-adjustable top and the flow control cap are the parts that actually change output.

Noise and splash

Separate the two sounds. An owner of this exact stainless model reports that the falling water can be loud depending on spout count and flow setting, and that the pump is not as muffled as the Drinkwell Seascape. Kitty Loaf, reviewing the Drinkwell 360 line, rates the motor favorably because the submerged pump stays quiet while there is enough water, but says flowing water is very apparent at a single stream on maximum flow. Nobody has published a decibel figure for this model, so there is no measured number to plan a room around. Both that reviewer and the owner put water outside the bowl, so put the fountain on a mat or a water-resistant floor.

Cleaning and filters

PetSafe’s Quick Start Guide asks for a carbon filter every 2-4 weeks and a foam filter every 1-2 months. The 2011 Operating Guide for the same part number is more aggressive: filters about every two weeks, and more often for multi-pet households or high-hair pets. No price has been published for PAC00-13712 or PAC00-13711, so treat the running cost as an estimate rather than a figure. Kitty Loaf puts filters at roughly $2 each, or $42-$71 a year on the Drinkwell 360.

Filter changes are not optional here. Skip them and the streams weaken and eventually the pump stops. Rinse the filters rather than soaping them, and PetSafe warns that using unauthorized filters voids the warranty. Running the water below the minimum line on the bowl can damage the pump, and that line is not easy to see on stainless.

Parts, warranty and repairs

Repairability is the strongest thing about this fountain. PetSafe publishes exact-model parts: cone locks PAC00-13116, flow adjustment kit PAC00-13117, plumbing kit PAC00-13118, multi-streams kit PAC00-13119, replacement pump PAC00-13206, foam filters PAC00-13711, carbon filters PAC00-13712 and a cleaning kit CKPH. The pump comes apart for descaling and is a normal owner job rather than a warranty event.

Two conditions come with the one-year warranty. Clean the pump regularly or coverage is void, and use PetSafe’s own filters or coverage is void as well. Owners report buying replacement pumps directly from Drinkwell, and one owner in r/CatAdvice still had a 10-year-old Drinkwell on its original pump after weekly pump and filter cleaning with monthly filter changes.

Is it worth it?

The case for it is capacity and geometry: a gallon of water in an open bowl every pet can reach, plus a parts catalog that keeps the unit running. The case against is maintenance — weekly washing, filters on a two-to-four-week clock, and an assembly most testers describe as a chore.

Check the store panel above for current prices. PetSafe direct and a specialist retailer both listed $75.99 in October 2026, against a $99.99 retail reference at that retailer. Above that reference the price is hard to justify for a single-pet home. For two cats and a dog, one bowl they can all reach is worth more than a quieter fountain elsewhere.

Which model this is

This page covers the PetSafe Drinkwell Stainless Multi-Pet Fountain, part number PWW00-13705, 128 oz, listed as ASIN B002SB91QS. Retailers also call it the Drinkwell 360 Stainless Steel and use the older SKU D360SS, which one specialist retailer says replaces D360SS-RE. PetSafe sells a separate plastic Drinkwell 360 in the same family; its dimensions, test results and noise behavior are not this model’s, and neither are the filter intervals. The Canadian version is a different part number, D360SS-CA-17.
