Summary

A compact 1500 W electric deep fryer for small batches, with no temperature control — the thermostat is preset to about 375 °F and you cannot turn it down. Check whether that fixed heat suits what you fry: it handles french fries and onion rings well, but burns chicken tenders on the outside before the center cooks.

Strengths

  • Heats up fast; fries and fish sticks are ready in minutes, owners report.
  • Compact footprint that leaves the counter mostly clear.
  • No controls to learn — scoop food in, lift it out with the included slotted scoop.
  • Nonstick inside and out wipes clean easily.
  • The snap-on lid lets you store oil in the fryer between sessions.
  • The magnetic safety cord pulls free if it catches, so a snag is less likely to drag the fryer off the counter.

Weaknesses

  • No temperature control: the fixed ~375 °F heat overcooks many foods before the inside is done.
  • There is no basket — you fish food out piece by piece with the slotted scoop.
  • Capacity is about one serving of french fries at a time, despite the “six big servings” label.
  • Wirecutter’s test burned chicken tenders on the outside while the center stayed raw.
  • One owner reported the unit broke during a move — a single anecdote, not a pattern.

Fixed heat: the one thing to check

The GranPappy has no dial, no digital controls and no adjustable thermostat. The factory-set control holds the oil at about 375 °F, full stop. For french fries and onion rings that is a good frying temperature, and Wirecutter’s test confirmed both cook well there. It is the wrong heat for gentler jobs: in that test, chicken tenders burned on the outside before the center cooked through, and owners on forums report the same pattern — food overdone outside, underdone inside. If you want to fry at lower temperatures, this fryer cannot do it.

Capacity and the scoop

The maker’s “six big servings” line refers to the oil-to-food ratio — 6 cups of oil makes 6 cups of food — not to what fits at once. Wirecutter found only one serving of french fries fit at a time. Instead of a basket you get a slotted scoop, so food comes out piece by piece; owners find that awkward for small or delicate items. The snap-on lid is the practical highlight: it stores the oil in the fryer between sessions, which the maker says saves money on oil.

Cleaning, parts and warranty

Wipe the nonstick surfaces and wash the cast aluminum body and scoop. Presto’s service parts department stocks genuine replacement parts for the GranPappy line and offers free PDF instruction manuals for the sub-variants. The 1-year limited warranty covers defects; confirm whether shipping to a repair center is covered.

Is it worth it?

At $64.99 direct from Presto — the same price Everything Kitchens lists — the GranPappy is among the cheapest new electric deep fryers available, and the missing controls are an understandable tradeoff. Best Buy lists it at $83.73 and Lowes at $83.15 as of the October 2026 search, and Best Buy results also showed $66.79–$69.99; the tradeoffs get harder to justify as the price climbs. Above about $85, fryers with adjustable thermostats and baskets become available — the Cuisinart CDF-200 that Wirecutter recommends runs about $130 and adds both, plus a larger capacity. The GranPappy suits someone who wants the simplest possible countertop fryer for small batches of fries, shrimp or onion rings and understands the fixed heat.

Which model this is

This page covers the Presto 05411 GranPappy Electric Deep Fryer, sold in black. The US Amazon listing is ASIN B0000Z6JK0. Do not confuse it with the smaller FryDaddy (05420, 4-cup), the larger 8-cup DualDaddy, or the GranPappy Elite (0541408), which has a different cover and parts.
