Reolink E1 4MP: problems, parts and running costs
Checked: 2026-10-06
Summary
The 4 MP E1 is a budget indoor pan/tilt camera whose main weaknesses are 2.4 GHz-only Wi-Fi with owner-reported dropouts, no Ethernet fallback, and no standalone RTSP/ONVIF. Running costs are low — a microSD card is the only required purchase, and no subscription is needed for local recording. At the $29.99–$45.99 direct price it is a reasonable buy for a nursery or room monitor on a stable 2.4 GHz network.
Common problems and fixes
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi dropouts — the most common complaint; owners report constant disconnections and cameras performing worse on strong 2.4 GHz than on weak 5 GHz. Reolink’s own support article lists “The Camera Drops from WiFi” and “Weak WiFi Signal Reception” as documented E1-series causes. Fix: move the camera closer to the router, reboot, change the Wi-Fi channel, or disconnect other devices. No Ethernet fallback exists. [13][15]
- VLAN / subnet traversal failure — an owner of six E1 (non-Pro) cameras reports they cannot traverse VLANs or subnets, with persistent ARP and DHCP timeouts and a DHCPOFFER roughly every 6 minutes. Power-cycling restores connectivity temporarily. Fixed IPs only partly helped. [6]
- Day/night switching triggers false motion alerts — a verified owner reports the camera detects the switch between colour day mode and black-and-white night mode as motion, making it poor for security use. The 4 MP E1 uses an auto-switching IR-cut filter, so this applies. [11]
- Two-way audio delay and echo — owners report roughly a 2-second delay and echo that makes two-way talk impractical on a same-network phone call. [16]
- Pan/tilt lag — owners describe slow, laggy pan/tilt response; one summarises the E1 line as “a cheap motor and hall effect sensor… built to a price”. TechHive’s E1 Pro review independently flagged “Pan-and-tilt is sometimes slow to respond”. [5][27]
- Sporadic reboots — a verified owner of two E1 Pro units reports both “reboot sporadically, and take a very long time to become responsive when connecting”. Reolink’s support documentation lists auto-rebooting as a known E1-series failure class. [11][15]
- Firmware stagnation — community reports indicate the E1 line received no firmware newer than the shipped build, while the E1 Pro and E1 Zoom did. One user documented a firmware “update” that downgraded the camera and broke night vision and Wi-Fi. [25]
Parts and consumables
- microSD card (not included) — the product page states 512 GB maximum; Reolink’s own Wireless Camera User Manual (Sept 2021) says “up to 128GB” for the E1 and requires Class 10 or higher, FAT32. Budget for a card separately; the manual is the more conservative source. [1][24]
Yearly running cost
The only required ongoing cost is a microSD card, which is a one-time purchase. Cloud recording is optional and requires a paid plan. A Reolink NVR or Home Hub is an optional extra if you want storage beyond one 512 GB card or AES-128 hub encryption. No subscription is required for local SD recording. [1][24]
When it is a good buy
At the $29.99–$45.99 direct price band observed on Reolink’s US store (October 2026), the E1 is a defensible buy for a baby monitor, pet watch or room check on a stable, single-subnet 2.4 GHz network. The 2-year limited warranty and 30-day money-back guarantee reduce the connectivity risk.
Avoid it if you need 5 GHz, a wired port, RTSP/ONVIF for Home Assistant/Synology/Blue Iris, or if you run VLANs. In those cases the E1 Pro ($55.29–$69.99 direct) is the better choice — it is dual-band, supports RTSP/ONVIF standalone, and has full third-party software compatibility. The E1 Zoom ($89.99 direct) adds optical zoom and 8 MP resolution. [4][21][23][30][35]
