Summary

A bare 18V brushless 4-1/2 inch angle grinder for light-to-medium cutting and grinding on RIDGID’s 18V battery platform, with a paddle switch, electronic brake and tool-free guard. Check the wheel and arbor on arrival: one owner reports a 7/8 inch wheel in a box labeled for a 5/8 inch arbor.

Strengths

  • The electronic brake stops the wheel within seconds of releasing the paddle.
  • It handles light-to-medium jobs and feels close to a 9-amp corded grinder.
  • The slim, rubber-overmolded grip and compact body suit tight spaces.
  • Tool-free guard adjustment and a folding-tab flange nut that allows hand wheel changes.
  • It runs on the whole RIDGID 18V battery line.
  • The Lifetime Service Agreement covers it for life where eligible and registered in time.

Weaknesses

  • It slows under heavy pressure and is not meant for the heaviest jobs.
  • Only the single supplied guard is included; there is no separate cut-off wheel shroud.
  • The manual allows only Type 27 depressed-center wheels and forbids Type 1 straight or cutoff wheels.
  • There is no variable speed.
  • One owner reports a 7/8 inch wheel in a box labeled for a 5/8 inch arbor, so check the wheel on arrival.
  • RIDGID lists weight at 5 lb while Pro Tool Reviews measured 4.5 lb bare, so expect a little variation in the figures.

Performance and what it suits

The only detailed hands-on review found is Pro Tool Reviews’ 2022 test, and it is positive without being a lab measurement. The reviewer described the brushless motor as feeling and performing much like a 9-amp corded grinder, and called the tool a good fit for knocking off rust and paint, polishing, and cutting frozen nuts and bolts. Under heavy pressure it slows compared with larger cordless grinders, so heavier jobs call for a bigger class of tool. The electronic brake stops the wheel within a matter of seconds. No instrumented test of runtime, brake-stop time or vibration was located.

Wheels, guard and upkeep

The manual is strict about wheels: use only Type 27 depressed-center grinding wheels, and never attach a Type 1 straight or cutoff wheel. Only the single supplied guard comes in the box, so there is no separate cut-off shroud, though the guard rotates without tools via a spring-loaded button. The spindle flange nut has a folding tab that lets you change a wheel by hand without a spanner wrench. For upkeep, the vent filter can be rinsed with water or blown out with compressed air and must be fully dry before reassembly. RIDGID sells replacement parts, and no long-term repairability assessment was located.

Warranty and the Lifetime Service Agreement

The operator’s manual states a 90-day satisfaction guarantee plus a three-year limited warranty. RIDGID also promotes its Lifetime Service Agreement when the tool is registered within 90 days of purchase, and that is the stronger coverage where it applies; the documents do not spell out exactly how the two programs interact. RIDGID items bought on Amazon are not eligible for the LSA.

Prices and running costs

Prices move around, so treat these as reference points with a store attached. The Home Depot category listing shows $139.00 for the bare tool and the product page shows $149.00; the R86047K kit with a 4.0 Ah MAX Output battery and charger is $219.00 (The Home Depot). Pro Tool Reviews reported a $159.00 bare-tool retail price in August 2022. The recurring costs are the separate battery and charger plus consumable grinding wheels, with no subscription or consumable lock-in.

Which model this is

This page covers the R86047B, the bare-tool version; the kit with a 4.0 Ah MAX Output battery and R86093 charger is the R86047K, and Pro Tool Reviews tested the same tool as the R86047. It is a brushless 4-1/2 in. machine, not the brushed R860451B. Do not merge it with other RIDGID grinders. The listing this review follows is ASIN B0BZWJS127.
