Performance and everyday use

The Exynos 1330 and 4GB of RAM are the phone’s weak point. Owners on Reddit and the Samsung Community describe stutters, slowdowns, apps closing in the background, and UI freezes, and several blame the 4GB of RAM. One Samsung Community owner writes “the lag is almost unbearable” and says switching between apps makes them restart. A Reddit owner reports the phone becomes almost completely unresponsive after taking screenshots, needing a hard restart, and others report System UI crashes. Music apps such as Spotify closing in the background is another recurring complaint. Samsung’s six major OS upgrades and six years of security updates are the counterweight, and light users who stick to calls, texting and social media report smooth operation.

Battery life and charging

The 5000mAh battery lasts a full day and beyond for light use, but test results vary with method. Consumer Reports measured 29 hours, which it calls average; GSMArena measured about 12 hours of active use. Tech Advisor measured 10h 24min, about 4.5 hours shorter than the A15 5G, and GSMArena notes individual runtimes are shorter than the previous model. Charging runs at 25W over USB-C, and the charger is not in the box, so budget for a separate adapter. There is no wireless charging.

Cameras

The 50MP main camera is the one worth using, and it does well in good light. Consumer Reports rates its images very good for color, exposure, sharpness and noise. PhoneArena’s camera result is weaker, with photo quality a little below the A15 5G, though video improved. The 5MP ultrawide and 2MP macro are consistently called low quality, and Tech Advisor calls the macro pointless. Video tops out at 1080p and 30 fps.

Which model this is

This is the Galaxy A16 5G, US unlocked model SM-A166U with the Exynos 1330 chip. Other markets get a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 variant that may perform differently. US model numbers are SM-A166UZKAXAA for Blue Black and SM-A166UZGAXAA for Light Gray, the only two US colors. Do not confuse it with the Galaxy A16 4G, the Galaxy A15 5G or the Galaxy A17 5G. Is it worth it?

Samsung’s US MSRP for the 128GB model is $199.99. Street prices have run lower: Tech Advisor saw the phone at $145.99 at Walmart in January 2025, and CNET found it at Best Buy and Samsung for $150 in November 2025. CDW listed it at $231.99. Below $150 it is strong value, since the AMOLED panel, six-year update promise and IP54 rating carry it and the slow chip is easier to accept. From $151 to $175 it is still reasonable for buyers who value screen and updates over speed. From $176 to $200 it is only fair next to newer mid-rangers, and above $200 it is hard to recommend. Budget for a separate 25W charger and a case, and a microSD card if you need more storage.
