Summary
Samsung’s 2026 flagship with a 6.9-inch display, 200MP camera, 5000mAh battery, and integrated S Pen. Check the Privacy Display before you buy: it halves maximum brightness when active and narrows viewing angles even when off.
Strengths
- Consumer Reports rated it the top smartphone with an 88/100 score, the third consecutive year an Ultra model has topped their rankings.
- The 200MP f/1.4 main camera delivers cleaner low-light results with less noise than the previous generation.
- 60W wired charging is a meaningful upgrade: 84% in 30 minutes, full charge in 43 minutes in GSMArena’s test.
- Seven years of OS and security updates matches the best in the industry.
- The S Pen has effectively zero latency.
- Rounded corners improve ergonomics over previous sharp-edged Ultras.
Weaknesses
- The aluminum frame scratches more easily than the S25 Ultra’s titanium; one owner reports visible wear “in a very short time.”
- The Privacy Display halves maximum brightness when active (708 to 329 nits manual) and narrows viewing angles even when off.
- Battery capacity is unchanged at 5000mAh while competitors ship 6000–7000mAh silicon-carbon cells.
- The large camera bump causes the phone to rock on flat surfaces, even with a case.
- Now Nudge AI is inconsistent and does not work in third-party apps like WhatsApp.
- Performance throttles to nearly half peak after 20 minutes of sustained load.

Privacy Display and screen
The Privacy Display is the headline hardware innovation: a sub-pixel-level privacy filter that limits viewing angles to approximately 45 degrees off-axis. It can be activated for the full screen, specific apps, notifications, or password fields. CNET’s reviewer keeps it on all the time, and Digital Trends says it “changed my behavior” on public transit.
The trade-off is significant. GSMArena measured 708 nits manual brightness with privacy off versus 329 nits with it on, and 1480 nits auto versus 751 nits auto. Even with the feature off, viewing angles are slightly narrower than the S25 Ultra. Maximum Privacy mode further degrades contrast, making blacks appear gray. One Samsung Community EU owner calls it “a nice gimmick but not worth the loss of screen brightness.”
The display is 8-bit with FRC, not true 10-bit, despite Samsung marketing “4x color depth processing precision.” There is no high-frequency PWM dimming.
Cameras and battery
The 200MP f/1.4 main sensor (up from f/1.7) delivers cleaner low-light results with less noise. The 50MP f/2.9 5x telephoto (up from f/3.4) improves low-light zoom. However, the 5x lens uses an ALoP design with a longer minimum focus distance, causing focus hunting in macro scenarios where the phone falls back to the main sensor. Low-light shutter lag of 0.5–1.5 seconds and occasional exposure inconsistency in high-contrast scenes are noted weaknesses. The 100x Space Zoom remains a party trick rather than a useful tool.
Battery life is solid but not class-leading. Consumer Reports measured 51.5 hours, among the longest tested. PCMag’s video test yielded 15h 5min, well behind the iPhone 17 Pro Max at 32h 11min. GSMArena’s active use score was 16h 23min. The 60W wired charging is a meaningful upgrade: 84% in 30 minutes and a full charge in 43 minutes in GSMArena’s test. Wireless charging at 25W requires a magnetic case for proper alignment.
Build, performance and software
The switch from titanium to aluminum frame is a mixed bag. Aluminum dissipates heat better and takes anodization for more vibrant colors, but scratches more easily. A Samsung Community EU owner reports scratches showing “in a very short time.” Digital Trends reports “zero micro-scratches” over months of use without a case. The camera bump remains large and causes the phone to rock on flat surfaces. The phone is IP68 rated (1.5m for 30 min), behind competitors already shipping IP69.
Performance is excellent but throttles under sustained load. Digital Trends measured a drop to nearly half peak performance after 20 minutes of 3DMark, though even throttled it ties iPhone sustained scores. Geekbench 6 scores (3578 single / 10700 multi) slightly top the S25 Ultra. One UI 8.5 includes Galaxy AI features: Photo Assist, Document Scan, Now Nudge, Now Brief, and Creative Studio. Now Nudge is the most criticized AI feature, with owners reporting it never works or is unavailable in their region. Seven years of OS and security updates matches the best in the industry.
Is it worth it?
At $1,299.99 launch price, the S26 Ultra is expensive but justified for buyers who want the most complete Samsung offers. Samsung.com offers up to $720 instant trade-in credit or $200 off without trade-in. The main reasons to pass are the aluminum frame’s scratch susceptibility, unchanged battery capacity, lack of magnetic charging, and the Privacy Display’s brightness trade-off if that feature is not important to the buyer. An owner with an S23 Ultra says it is “not worth upgrading” and “same phone since S22 Ultra.”
