Summary
A Wear OS health watch on Samsung’s 40 mm case, with a bright 3,000-nit screen, a faster chip and a set of health metrics that are not paywalled. It is a small step up from the Galaxy Watch 8 for more money, so work out whether the newest software or the cheaper previous model suits you before buying.
Strengths
- Bright 3,000-nit display that stays readable in direct sunlight.
- Accurate exercise tracking, including heart rate during sustained runs.
- Rich health and fitness insights that are not paywalled.
- Lighter, more comfortable “air pocket” bands than the Galaxy Watch 8.
- Raise-to-talk Gemini and reliable gesture controls.
- Vitals, Fitness Index and Heart Health Score add longer-term trend context.
Weaknesses
- Battery life is unchanged from the Galaxy Watch 8 despite a larger cell: a claimed 30 hours and about 26 hours tested with the always-on display on.
- Charging is slower than the previous model, at 108 minutes to full in testing.
- Sleep tracking dropped more than an hour of data on two nights across two review units.
- One controlled walk recorded an unusually low 102 bpm average heart rate that testers could not explain.
- No new sensors, and the design and display match the Galaxy Watch 8.
- Many AI health features need a Samsung phone, and iOS is not supported.

Battery life and charging
Samsung quotes 30 hours for the 40 mm model and 40 hours for the 44 mm, but the runtime estimate is unchanged from the Galaxy Watch 8 and the cell is only modestly bigger. PCMag measured about 26 hours with the always-on display on and 41.5 hours with it off; one early 40 mm unit died in 12–18 hours before a replacement behaved normally. That leaves it behind an Apple Watch Series 11 (43 hours with AOD on) and a Pixel Watch 4 (56 hours). Charging also regressed: 108 minutes to full on an 18 W brick, against 64 minutes for the Galaxy Watch 8 on the same adapter. The brick is not in the box.
Health, fitness and sleep tracking
The Vitals dashboard watches overnight heart rate, HRV, SpO2, breathing and skin temperature against a seven-night baseline, and Heart Health Score, Fitness Index (0–100) and Daily Cardio Load add longer-term context; none of it sits behind a paywall. PCMag found run heart rate matched an Apple Watch exactly and that CrossFit sessions stayed within 5–10 bpm, and the watch logs running-form metrics such as contact time, flight time and vertical oscillation. Sleep tracking was mostly accurate on cycle charts and resting heart rate, but two nights lost more than an hour of data across two units, a gap PCMag had also seen on other Samsung wearables. In a separately reported walk test the watch averaged 102 bpm where the tester’s normal average is about 125 bpm, which the tester flagged for further investigation and could not explain.
Is it worth it?
Samsung lists the 40 mm Bluetooth model at $379.99 and the 44 mm at $409, and adding LTE costs $50 ($429 and $459 respectively). The Galaxy Watch 8 launched at $349.99 and was selling around $299.99 by the time of these reviews, and both outlets call it the better value. Below about $300 the 40 mm Watch 9 becomes a good buy for a first Wear OS health watch; at $379.99 it is fair only if the newest health software and the faster chip are the point. For raw endurance, a Pixel Watch 4 lists at $349.99 and a Pixel Watch 5 at $399.99. Accurate blood-pressure readings need a separate cuff for calibration.
Which model this is
This is the Samsung Galaxy Watch 9, announced 22 July 2026, sold in 40 mm and 44 mm cases and in Bluetooth-only or LTE versions. The 40 mm comes in Cream or Graphite and the 44 mm in Silver or Graphite. The 40 mm Bluetooth model sits in Samsung’s SM-L340N family, with the 44 mm Bluetooth model as SM-L350N; the exact trailing suffix of this Cream unit could not be confirmed on a non-seller page. It is not the Galaxy Watch 8, the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 or the Pixel Watch 5, and this generation has no Classic model. The Amazon listing is ASIN B0H1DG7XRW.
