Summary

The Galaxy Watch 9 44 mm is Samsung’s 2024 mainstream Android smartwatch, with accurate fitness tracking and new overnight health metrics. It makes the most sense with a Samsung phone — several headline health features do not work on other Android phones.

Strengths

  • Exercise tracking is accurate: PCMag measured heart rate within 5 bpm of an Apple Watch Ultra 3 on a run.
  • The 3,000-nit Super AMOLED display stays readable in bright sun.
  • New overnight Vitals, Fitness Index and Heart Health Score metrics lead the health pitch.
  • Raise-to-talk Gemini is fast and reliable; Wareable used it twice as much as the button.
  • GPS landed within 20 meters of a Garmin Fenix 8 Pro Multi-Band in every Wareable test.
  • The 8.6 mm case stays comfortable for daily wear, running, the gym and indoor cycling.

Weaknesses

  • Battery life trails the field: 26 hours with always-on display against 43 for Apple and 56 for Pixel under PCMag’s protocol.
  • Charging regressed: 108 minutes to full versus 64 for the Watch 8, and the 18 W adapter is not in the box.
  • Wareable logged heart-rate dropouts during interval running across 10+ tests, including one run with about 8 minutes of data loss.
  • PCMag saw unexplained sleep-tracking gaps longer than an hour on two nights, on both test units.
  • Vitals, Bedtime Guidance, Energy Score and Sleep Apnea require a paired Samsung phone, not just any Android phone.
  • The case design is essentially unchanged from the Watch 8.

Battery life and charging

Samsung claims up to 30 hours, the same figure as the Watch 8. PCMag’s 40 mm unit, which shares internals with the 44 mm, measured 26 hours with the always-on display on and 41.5 hours with it off, against 39 hours for the Watch 8 under the same protocol. Wareable’s 44 mm testing saw 24 to 30 hours in real-world use depending on GPS, behind the Pixel Watch 4’s 48 hours and the Watch Ultra 2’s roughly four days. Charging is slower than the last generation: 108 minutes to 100% with an 18 W adapter that is not in the box, versus 64 minutes for the Watch 8, 77 for the Apple Watch Series 11 and 43 for the Pixel Watch 4. One of PCMag’s two test units drained at 12 to 18 hours with always-on display and was replaced by Samsung.

Health features and the Samsung phone requirement

The new metrics come from the same sensor array as the Watch 8: overnight Vitals (SpO2, heart rate, heart-rate variability, respiratory rate, skin temperature) after a 7-night baseline, plus Fitness Index, Daily Cardio Load and Heart Health Score. Sleep apnea detection is FDA-cleared for moderate-to-severe risk, needs 2 nights of data within 10 days and ships in selected countries only. Blood pressure requires calibration against a separate cuff — PCMag called it tedious — and readings are on-demand rather than background monitoring.

The catch is the phone. Vitals, Bedtime Guidance, Energy Score and Sleep Apnea require a paired Samsung phone on Android 13+, not merely any compatible Android phone, and Samsung has not said whether the Watch 8 will get the new metrics by update. PCMag also found the Running Coach “can be a little overbearing.”

Heart rate and sleep: two reviews disagree

PCMag’s run test put heart rate within 5 bpm of an Apple Watch Ultra 3, with average and maximum matching exactly. Wareable, testing the 44 mm unit, saw persistent dropouts during interval running across 10+ tests: one steady-state run lost about 8 minutes of data, while another run came within 0.5 bpm of a Garmin HRM 600 chest strap. The Watch 8 and Ultra 2 did not show the same problem with the same sensor. Sleep tracking splits the same way. PCMag logged gaps longer than an hour on two nights across both units — the same issue appeared on the Galaxy Ring, Watch 7 and the original Ultra, but not the Watch 8 — while Wareable reported reliable detection with no gaps. Treat this as unit or workout-type variance; no failure-rate data exists.

Is it worth it?

Samsung’s US site lists the 40 mm Bluetooth from $379.99, and PCMag’s August 2026 review puts the 44 mm at $409.99 — a $30 step up, with LTE another $50. At that price, PCMag recommends the Galaxy Watch 8 at $299.99 as the better value, and Wareable picks the Pixel Watch 4 at $349.99 for most Android users. Check your phone before the price: without a Samsung handset, the Vitals, Fitness Index and Heart Health Score features are locked, and the value case weakens. Recurring costs are optional — Samsung Care+ extended warranty, plus Strava’s 60-day trial and iFit’s 2-month trial that turn into paid subscriptions. Samsung backs watches launched in 2023 or newer with a 1-year limited warranty.

Which model this is

This page covers the Galaxy Watch 9 44 mm in Silver, Bluetooth only, model SM-L350NZSQXAA — the Amazon listing is ASIN B0H1D828TR.

The 44 mm also comes in Graphite, the 40 mm comes in Cream and Graphite, and LTE variants are separate SKUs at $50 more. Samsung launched the Watch 9 in 2024 as the successor to the Galaxy Watch 8 and Watch 7. Do not confuse it with the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, a 47 mm titanium watch.
