Summary
A premium Wear OS smartwatch with a stainless steel case, physical rotating bezel and roughly two-day battery, built for buyers who specifically want the bezel and steel build. Check your wrist before you buy: it comes in one 46mm size that testers call bulky.
Strengths
- The rotating bezel is consistently praised as more satisfying and precise than touch-only navigation.
- Independent testing puts battery life near two days, a clear step up from the base Galaxy Watch 8 and the Watch 6 Classic.
- The 3,000-nit peak brightness holds up outdoors, where it matters.
- Reviewers call the health suite — sleep apnea detection, antioxidant index, vascular load, body composition, ECG, SpO2 — the most comprehensive of any current smartwatch.
- Reviewers say Google Gemini handles complex queries well enough to be genuinely useful.
- 64GB of storage is a significant upgrade over the base model’s 32GB.
Weaknesses
- It comes in one 46mm size, and testers call it bulky and chunky, especially for sleep tracking.
- The $150 premium over the base Galaxy Watch 8 buys identical health features.
- The Dynamic Lug System is fiddly — one reviewer needed a paper clip to detach a band — and standard 22mm bands need an adapter.
- ECG, blood pressure, gesture controls, AI insights and snoring detection only work with a Samsung phone.
- Running Coach was called “a letdown”; a CNET reviewer with 20 years of running experience was labeled a beginner.
- It needs Samsung’s proprietary magnetic charger; standard Qi pads do not work.

Battery life and charging
Samsung claims 30 hours with the always-on display and 40 hours without it. Testing spread wide: PCMag measured 49 hours with AOD and 60 without, Consumer Reports measured 50 hours of typical use, and GSMArena got about 36 hours with AOD and 60 without. The base Galaxy Watch 8 managed 26 hours with AOD in PCMag’s test.
Charging took about 90 minutes in most tests; Consumer Reports measured 129 minutes. Samsung’s adaptive charging caps the battery at 85–90% to slow wear. Android Central’s unit lasted through two nights of sleep tracking with AOD and the “Hey Google” wake word on, and two hours of dual-band GPS burned about 20%.
The bezel and the Dynamic Lug
The physical rotating bezel is the reason to buy this watch. Reviewers call it great as ever, and the Quick Button earns its place for workout control. The Dynamic Lug System is the friction point: attaching a band means turning metal fittings 90 degrees, PCMag’s reviewer needed a paper clip to detach one, and standard 22mm quick-release bands do not fit without an adapter. The squircle cushion frame is also polarizing next to the rounder Watch 6 Classic.
Health features and the Samsung phone lock
The sensor stack is broad: FDA-authorized sleep apnea detection, an antioxidant index, vascular load monitoring, body composition, ECG and SpO2. ECG, blood pressure, gesture controls, AI insights and snoring detection require a Samsung phone, which guts the feature set on other Android phones. The antioxidant index needs you to take the watch off and press a thumb to the sensor, so it is a spot check, not a continuous measurement. Running Coach drew “a letdown” from Android Central, and CNET’s runner with 20 years of experience was labeled a beginner.
Is it worth it?
At the July 2025 launch MSRP of $499.99, this is a tough sell against the base Galaxy Watch 8 at $349.99–$379.99 — the $150 difference buys the bezel, steel case and Quick Button, not health features. Street prices in 2025 put Bluetooth models at $334.99–$384.99, where the math gets easier for bezel believers, and Samsung’s own store has offered trade-in credits up to $150. There is no subscription for core features and the Samsung Health Monitor app is free; the recurring spend is bands, sold separately. Samsung promises four years of software updates through 2029. If you want LTE, the SM-L505 adds $50 ($549.99 at launch). If the bezel does not matter to you, the base Watch 8 is the better value.
