Summary
Sonos’s smallest and cheapest portable speaker, made for a Sonos household that wants one rugged speaker to carry between Wi-Fi at home and Bluetooth on the road. Check the battery before you commit: the rated 10 hours is at moderate volume, and louder listening cuts it.
Strengths
- Reviewers consistently found the sound good for its size.
- It is genuinely rugged: TechRadar used it on a beach, in rain and dunked it in water.
- Dual-band Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, in-app EQ and Trueplay all work as expected.
- It slots into an existing Sonos system and pairs with a first-generation Roam.
- At 0.95 lb it is small enough to carry anywhere.
- A no-solder iFixit guide covers battery replacement.
Weaknesses
- The 10-hour rating is at moderate volume; louder playback shortens it.
- Mono only, with stereo content downmixed.
- Bluetooth is limited to SBC and AAC, with no LDAC or aptX.
- There is no speakerphone or Bluetooth call support.
- Google Assistant is not supported.
- Only one audio source can connect at a time.

Battery life and charging
Sonos rates the Roam 2 at up to 10 hours of continuous playback at moderate volume on a 5000 mAh cell. TechRadar’s formal test, a long playlist run twice at 60% volume, returned 10 hours over both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. RTINGS’ Sonos roundup, though, says the battery life is only five hours, and Sonos itself notes runtime varies with use, settings and environment. Treat the 10-hour figure as a ceiling and plan on a power bank. A Sonos community thread in August 2026 describes an owner whose battery showed depleted and the speaker would not power up; Sonos staff and other owners pointed to an underpowered adapter or a poor cable rather than a dead cell. Sonos requires a 7.5 W or higher USB-C adapter, which is not included, and debris in the uncovered charging port can also present as slow charging.
Sound, placement and connectivity
The acoustic design is one tweeter and one midwoofer, and it is mono. PCMag and Digital Trends both noted the DSP thins the low end at top volume rather than letting it distort, and Consumer Reports’ locked summary was less enthusiastic about the midrange and treble. Placement matters: standing the speaker upright puts the tweeter below the midwoofer, so it sounds better on its side. Bluetooth is 5.2 but limited to AAC and SBC, with no multipoint, no Google Fast Pair and one source at a time. Away from home it can join another Wi-Fi network but cannot be grouped into an existing Sonos system until it returns, and Google Assistant is gone while Sonos Voice Control and Amazon Alexa remain.
Durability, repairs and warranty
The shell is IP67 and took beach, rain and repeated dunking in TechRadar’s testing. iFixit publishes a no-solder Roam 2 battery replacement guide, but opening the shell cuts through adhesive and breaks the factory seals, and no source says the IP67 rating survives the job, so treat an opened unit as no longer waterproof. Sonos had not published a battery replacement programme for the Roam line as of the evidence read. Warranty length is unverified: confirm it on the receipt or Sonos’s warranty terms before relying on it.
Is it worth it?
Sonos sells the Roam 2 direct for $179, and the matching Sonos wireless charger is $49.99; a USB-C brick is not in the box. PCMag’s Editors’ Choice pick for non-Sonos buyers is the $79.99 Anker Soundcore Motion 300, which adds a speakerphone and LDAC, and the Beats Pill claims 24 hours of battery for $150. The Move 2 is $449 for backyard-level volume, and Sonos’s own employee writing says the newer Play knocks the Roam 2 out of the park on sound quality. Buy it if you are already in the Sonos app and want the smallest weatherproof unit that moves between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; there is no consumable or subscription cost beyond the unit and charger.
Which model this is
This page covers the Sonos Roam 2, released in May 2024. It is a minor revision of the original Roam, not a redesign, and it comes in Black, White, Sunset, Wave and Olive. The Amazon listing is ASIN B0CY6S748H. Do not confuse it with the first-generation Roam or Roam SL, the larger Move 2, or the newer Sonos Play.
