Summary

The Steelcase Amia is an ergonomic task chair with a 400 lb weight limit, four-way adjustable arms and a 12-year multi-shift warranty. No major review outlet has published independent hands-on testing of it, so check the fit in person and confirm the exact dimensions in Steelcase’s spec documents before you buy.

Strengths

  • A 400 lb weight capacity, higher than many competing task chairs.
  • Hidden LiveLumbar adds height-adjustable lumbar support without external hardware.
  • Four-way arms and seat-depth adjustment fit a wide range of body sizes.
  • The 12-year multi-shift warranty covers parts and labor for 24/7 use.
  • Chair or stool, armless, fabric or leather: the frame covers most setups.
  • Steelcase’s Remade program remakes used Amia chairs to like-new condition.

Weaknesses

  • No independent hands-on test from Wirecutter, Tom’s Guide, RTINGS, CNET or PCMag was found.
  • Exact chair dimensions and weight are not shown on the main product page.
  • No owner reports were captured, so long-term durability beyond the warranty is unverified.
  • The Amia Air variant is sold in North America only.
  • Quick Ship eligibility varies by configuration, so not every build ships fast.
  • Older chairs still in circulation may lack the newer zero-foam arm cap.

The two Amia variants

Steelcase sells the chair as “Amia + Amia Air”. Both share the same frame, 400 lb capacity, four-way arms, seat-depth adjustment, full recline with an upright back lock, and the same warranty. The standard Amia hides its LiveLumbar support inside the back; the Amia Air uses an Air LiveBack, a flexible geometric backrest. The Amia Air is sold in North America only, while the standard Amia reaches Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. A 3D Microknit back is an option.

Independent testing

A search of the major outlets turned up no instrumented test of the Amia. Wirecutter’s 2026 office chair guide recommends the Steelcase Gesture and does not include the Amia; Tom’s Guide’s 2026 guide recommends the Steelcase Karman for comfort and also leaves it out. That gap matters to a buyer: the chair’s case rests on the manufacturer’s specs and warranty, not on third-party measurements. Exact dimensions and weight sit in a specifications tab and linked documents rather than on the product page.

Warranty, repairs and upkeep

The Limited Lifetime Warranty runs 12 years with multi-shift, 24/7 parts and labor coverage, which Steelcase calls the strongest in the industry. Steelcase publishes user guides and assembly and disassembly documents through its resources portal, and maintenance intervals sit in those documents. The Circular by Steelcase Remade program remakes used or damaged Amia chairs to like-new condition with nearly half the carbon emissions and high landfill diversion.

Is it worth it?

No reliable retail price was captured for the Amia from Steelcase’s store or its dealers, so weigh it on the specs and service terms rather than a headline number. The 400 lb rating and the 12-year multi-shift warranty are the strong spec-sheet points, and the lack of independent testing means you are relying on Steelcase’s reputation. For scale, Wirecutter lists the Steelcase Gesture at $1,599 from Steelcase.
